This forum is amazing! I'm so glad I stumbled onto Craig's site, and subsequently this site. I've been spending time reading through old posts and trying to catch up on what's been going on around here. There's just so much good information and great art, my head is still spinning.
Anyway, I've been itching to try some of the techniques I've been reading about so I picked up on an old picture a lot of you have already painted. That's right, it's Mr. Old Indian Guy again! I've never used Photoshop to "paint" with before, although I've used it for years in my graphic design work.
I know he's a little fuzzy, I need to work on those edges, but here he is. Took me about 45 minutes.
Oh, and as a side note about the Mac/PC Gamma issue... I use a PC at home and there's a control panel that's installed with Photoshop. You can use this control panel to change the display to Mac default instead of PC defualt. Then (supposedly) you'll be seeing images the same way as the Mac folks. I did it and now I can see all the detail in those cool Spooge Demon pics.
Cheers!

I think your version of the old indian male looks a bit sad, looking good though

Couldn't see your image, but I'm wondering what control panel lets you change your monitor settings like that. Please explain... |

Nice pic Assassin - looks kind of like Ben Kingsley in Ghandi! top stuff. You do definitely want to add a little definition to the edges, though. Even maybe some highlights, just to bring the front of the face out of the background.
As for the whole gamma issue, there's a simple solution - get a loan, buy a mac (or PC), to run alongside your PC (or mac), and that's that!
Seriously, though, gamma is something your graphics card controls *should* be able to fix. Failing that, there is an adobe gamma control panel in your control panels folder (if you've got the right version of photoshop), or there should at least be a gamma control in Photoshop itself.
Didn't know it could switch between PC/Mac autmatically though. I know Fireworks can, but it's designed for multi-platform graphics...
Okay, I'll go now

Looking good FA, just needs some sharpening up. Looks like something out of National Geographic.
My adobe gamma control panel (old mac version) just has a slider to change the numeric gamma values. I never use it though; I like the Mac gamma, or else I change things on my monitor (gamma is basically just brightness and contrast). However, if you are concerned with cross-platform, I can see where the control panel would come in handy.

Thanks for the comments. I haven't done any painting in a while because of the mess factor, but PS painting changes all that.
Get-up Kid: To access the control panel I'm talking about, go to Start-Settings-Control Panels and then click on the Adobe Gamma CP. Change the "Desired:" drop-down to "Macintosh Default" instead of "Windows Default". That should change it to 1.8 instead of 2.2, making everything appear a little brighter. And then make sure that the Adobe Gamma Loader is in your Startup folder so that it takes effect every time. Hope that helps. |
