In an earlier topic somebody suspected that I used a bird from Heavy Metal movie as my reference for cybobird... Sorry, that was not the case, my inspiration was a real gull that was attacking me...
Anyway, if you want to see how I made it, visit http://www.geocities.com/lanceart/article04.html - but beware, the page is really heavy.
Here's the picture, if you haven't seen it yet:

Lance (I mean lnc - seems we both like handle shortening ), that's a very nice and interesting making-of article... but do you really paint on multiple layers? That's bizarre
well, I like your picture, as I already said in that other thread - in my eyes it beats the winner and 2nd placer (sorry Marvel) hands down...

Hey Lance. =))
Yes, the bird's framework _really_ reminds me of it. =)))
It is indeed a nice very image. I think its left wing seems a bit shorter than the other, other than that, great! Looking forward to seeing more of your work!
cheers,
frost.

Saffron: "Marvel" got 2nd? Ah, it's simply a popularity thing... sad. (typical scene thing).

I don't think it was a "scene thing" that Marvel got the second place... He doesn't have so original style that it can be recognized by everyone, and all the pics in the compo were shown without the name or signature of the author.
If I have had time to add a fairy with big boobs riding the bird, I would have won...
Just joking, I think Marvel did quite good job with his picture. He understands the way pictures for scene gfx compos have to be made, they have to be like good advertisements, as every picture is shown for just 15 seconds or something. The ones that are remembered usually won, so also naming the image well makes a difference ("Kam tu papa" is better name IMHO than "Cybobird", as it has more humour in it). His image also had more story in it. (About the winner then... I'm quite certain it's drawn over scanned pics, as the work-in-progress images seemd fake... The jury should have disqualified it...)
The quality of the big screen is also always poor compared to monitors - which favors images with good contrast and big, easily recognizable shapes. I should have tuned the contrast of my image up a bit, it looked too pale on the big screen.
Saffron: In a mechanical image like this I think it's easier to paint on several layers, as overlapping areas are easier to handle, and I don't have to paint the parts in the order from back to front.
Frost: I think the problem is in the right wing, the joint in it is too low, making the lower part too short and the upper part too long. I had to make the wing in such a hurry to catch the compo deadline that I didn't have time to correct it. Also the light in the tail is too flat, there should be some shadow from the legs and the shape should appear more curved.
I'm sorry to tell you that there probably won't be new images by me anytime soon, but I try to put up an old-skool gallery onto my web pages - images from years 1989-1995 when I was active on the scene...
(BTW I had to shorten Lance to "lnc" as Lance was already registered by someone...)
