A couple of things just for the fun of it. I'm currently strugling with learning 3D and I am going to try and model this rather generic looking green character.
Just put it up on the off chance that some of you might find it slightly interesting (?)

Comments are welcome.

looking good, although it's a bit too human.. try playing with his proportions a bit more.

which way are you planning to model it? (what software/tools)

I could have made it less human but I wanted to have a go at doing a human type head, but I can never be bothered with borin' stuff like that. I need to jazz it up, make it interesting if its just for practice

I'm using MAX 3 and I'm going to try using the meshsmooth/deform a box method. it's the only technoque that's made sense to me at this point in time.

You should really try the spline-modelling tools ("SurfaceTools") which, if i remember correctly, are built into max 3.. it's quite easy once you get the hang of it, and you have better control over the model than in the standard mesh editing procedures.
here's my first head modeling try..(hope you don't mind me breaking and entering your post )

I'd stick with meshsmooth. surface tools might just drive you crazy.. not to mention that max4 will be making some awesome advances with meshsmooth (allowing hard edges and some other stuff)

I've had a bit of experiance with patches from playing around in Animation Master. and I would have to say that they seem to be a better solution for facial animation. but I really want to get used to pushing polys around as I'm very likely to be doing low poly stuff for games etc. I like the meshsmooth becasue it is more like moulding clay. and the techniques can be used for a wider range of things. But if I was to do some hi res animation I might go for patches.

Bilbo- no, no, feel free to break in and share any knowlage you have. I am a compleate newbee to 3D. I have some knowlage of what is involved through reading magazines and fluffing around but I have a ton of stuff to learn

Thanks to Spooge, I have found an intersting way of quickly drawing out quick comps. I liked this subjectmatter, Rinaldo, I hope you dont mind me painting one of these too.

This took about 20 minutes. I wasn't going for realism, just a sense of light and volume.

I am now pencilling up a composition for your robot design. I hope to post it by the end of the week.

Thanks for the subject matter...

Rinaldo: Wow, that front-view really looks like one of the goblins from the old video game "The Immortal". Fred: I have to go with Plop on this one. Spock, man. Spock.

Very cool though, both of you.

Oh, and Rinaldo... if you have any questions about low-poly modeling (any of the stuff under "edit mesh") or applying texture coordinates, feel free to ask. While I may not be the best artist, I at least know the tools pretty well.

Your green guy is a bit more otherworldly Fred. I like the more sophisticated "spock" (?) look.

Waylon- I will be sure to take you up on that offer. as soon as I run into some problems. Thanks

What is considered "low poly" at the moment? I was mainly interesed in the count on characters these days, in the newer games for playstation 2 and stuff?

One more try. This was 30 minutes, and I tapped back into my comic library, to remember again his face. Big ass eyes, big pointy chin...
I used to love this character, I think that is why I picked this image in particular to do my own rendition of.

Rinaldo-how is the 3D model coming?

That's a terrific, moody rendition of the HobGoblin in the Spider Man series, Fred...That's great He was always my favorite character.

Yeahhhhh now its happening Fred that one rocks.

3D modeling is going like this

Wake up in morning
Get all pumped up about doing some kick ass 3D characters.
Log on here
See spooge art
Start drawing in 2D
Go to bed

But seriosly I'm getting there but I have such a love of 2D stuff that I get side tracked all the time. I haven't gotten very far with this model yet. I play around with MAX and find stuff out look in the manuals all the time. Start something realise that it sucks and start again another way. I draw so fast that 3D is very tedious at times. I can't get that image into viewable form quick enough yet. But I really like the idea of 3D so I'm just gonna plough away until It all clicks.
I'll post some stuff as soon as it starts to resemble something, but I imagine that it will be rather shit.

I've decided to take the whole week off in order to really get stuck into it
But I would guess that I'll be doing some more 2D fantasy pics as well. My head is bursting with images at the moment.
