Does anyone know where I could find a nice tutorial on curvilinear perspective? I really dig the effect but i can't seem to pull it off and every 'tutorial' I've seen on it basically says 'I did my calculations/grid on another page...' and that's the end of it.. yeah, it looks cool! but how in the HELL did you do it?! heh...
Thanks,

hey, good question.
This would be a good subject for someone to talk about, regarding reflections on balls (can I say that on TV?).
I must admit I am bad with this stuff. |

LOL
>>>"Wanna learn more?? Well, get yourself a book of architectural photos that have a large selection of wide-angle photos and study the distortion yourself! You can figure it out! I did!"<<<
Ah well.. I guess there is no truly defined way to do it.. thanks for the link though. I think I might be able to figure it out.. if not I guess I could always cheat and use 'spherize' on a grid or something.. that's my only other option off the top of my head.

i learned a bit about curvilinear perspective in school. unfortunately its been a few years and i haven't really used the knowledge, so i'm a bit rusty.
unless you're working on a picture that's really long, it shouldn't be a factor, but if you DO want to try curvilinear perspective, the way i was taught was pretty simple. it's hard to explain without pictures, so here is a (not so) quick diagram:
so as you can see, its actually 3 different pictures pasted together at the dotted lines. each 1/3rd is a 1 point perspective with different vanishing points. along the area where i drew curves on the wall, there is a different vanishing point for every millimeter along the wall. this is impossible to plot out, so if you're drawing a crowded hallway, you'll have to fudge the perspective on a lot of objects to get it looking right.
this is a pretty extreme curvilinear example, but i didn't want to make it too wide.
in a cartoon, when a character runs from one end of a hallway to the other, this is what the background actually looks like.
fun!

I think if you add 2 more points giving it 5 you can get the fisheye look. Eureka!
Thanks for your help!
Yeah I've noticed that cartoons do a lot of curvilinear work for backdrops so they can pan without having to cut to a new one.

yeah. whenever i was doing exercises with curvilinear perspective, i found it easier to just fudge the perspective rather than add 2 extra vp's. if you were to clean up that diagram, and just leave the curved wall lines, the curve would look pretty smooth.
