In the novel -> art thread someone mentioned the book Dune. Anyway I decided I would give it a shot. Was going for a more brush stroked image, like how Craig expresses so well, Although I seem to take advantage of the smudge tool, rather laying down a new value. anyway, here goes. (Please critic)

--Was going to fix your link, but looks like you got it.

Looks neat although it reminds me of Command & Conquer Tiberium Sun instead of Dune.

Pretty nice stuff! I like the dunes alot, but alot of stuff seems unfinished, ie the clouds, character, etc.. Cloud/sky colors are a bit off. You seem to have a neat notion of lighting/shadow, that's good, but you need to focus more on how the shapes create shadows on one another depending on where the light is comming from.

It would also be fun if there was something going on in the pic, IE the freemen pointing at a sandworm eating their spice harvester Or Atreides riding a sandworm, hehe. Right now he's pointing at a Dune of sand.

I think the signature is much too revelant. Keep it cleaner/less noticable.

Hi there Kain Victus.

Aha! Did someone mention DUNE? [ears prick up]

The pic is real nice! I like the armour on the guy & I'm guessing he's a Sardakaur (if I remember, they are the only ones who wear armour)?

I think the guy would look cool with some real sharp shadows on him. Arrakis is a desert planet and, guessing from the pic, the time is probably around mid-day. The smudge tool is a fine for blending colour but, imho, it doesn't work too well when blending areas of light and shadow. However, those dunes look terrific, you've given the pic an awesome sense of scale! Perhaps the soldier could be pointing at some distant troopers crossing the dunes.

You've kinda inspired me to do some more DUNE stuff today, so here's a concept sketch for an ornithopter. It's not of Francis/proximo quality, but I hope you get the idea.

Thanks for the input guy.

Yeah I really wanted to make the sky Red, but then there wouldn't be much of a light source or atleast not such a sun type light source. I might end up painting over it in different tones with more dark contrasting colors then give the landscape a less view range receeding into shadows. And the pointing thing is true.. I thought about putting something in, like a Sand Worm, however I thought that would defiently throw off the scale. I might instead put like a Sand worm marking, or tunnel type thing.

Anyway. I am going out of town and wont be back for a week so I wont get to work with all this new fond inspiration . but now that I have something to work with (composition) I think it will be much easier to add all those nice shadows and colors on top. Btw, this is my first attempt at a rock ledge, rocks are harder to draw then they appear! Any tips? Thank,

~Kain Victus

Oh btw... I have defiently decided That I am gonna paint over this one. (Has alot more chance, being that I dont have to start from scratch. Anyway, expect an updated version, in more red marune darkish tone, with alot more action going on and stronger more colorful shadows (no smudge, smudge bad Bad habit!) Anyway, All be prepared next week! When I get back! Mwahaha! I Can see it now!..........Anyway I am off now! Toodles, time to spend some nice quality timeon the beach in FL

Sorry Kain, I saw Spooge's pic first, didn't notice you were the first to do this. As I mentioned in Spooge's thread, I love Dune! However, that looks more like a clear day in the Sahara or something. I always thought the sky's to be maroon colored in Dune.. maybe it's just me.. but if you made the sky kind of a maroonish/brown then it'd kinda take on the darkish sci-fi look Dune somehow forced into my brain.

I would have the still-suit (if that's what it is) be a different color than the sand. In the book, an interesting contrast is between the fleshy, fragile humans in complex suits against the vast, harsh dessert. That's my opinion.

Don't get me started on Dune!
