I found some old sketchbooks from school. I have a stack about a foot tall, but I only scanned a few images.

This is a strange infant in a giant tunnel. I don't remember doing this one.

This is a charles brownian character.

I drew this when I was trying to describe a dream I had to my wife Linda. It was too bizarre to verbally explain.

Just a design sketch from some studio class.

Weird. I don't know what the hell this is about.

Another design studio sketch.

Thanks for your time.

Neat sketches Francis. I love your sketches of scenery.. great detail. Do you use alot of references when you do your architecture sketches? Oh and when are you going to work on that comic idea of yours?

Cool stuff... You've got that very vibrant "controlledly wobbly" architect's line... I've always been curious if they somehow teach that drawing style to architects all over the world, or does it come as a byproduct of learning that challenging profession?

I don't know why all architects draw this way. It is not always explicitly taught that you need to "have this wavy line" in your sketches, but it seems to be kind of a convention.

I do have an old book called "The Study of Architectural Design" by John F. Harbeson which is mostly about the Beaux Arts school design problem stuff - in one chapter, he talks about just this sort of thing:

"In principle, however, it is well to remember that a freehand line should be 'freehand' and not stiff and mechanical, and it is better to train the hand to use a wave motion, swinging above and below the line, crossing at regular intervals. As the draftsman gains control over his hand the oscillations become invisible to the naked eye, but a sense of vibration is present which gives freedom and character to the line so drawn."

Chapel, none of this stuff was drawn with reference. The design stuff was originated to solve some design problem, so there would not have been anything exactly like it to look at (at least that I know of, at the time).

By the way guys, it looks like I will be here the rest of the day. My hoses aren't getting to the shop until about 3 pm today.

That was actually sort of an accident. I spilled some water on the page and some of the ink started running. I decided to take a brush to it and see if I could add some tone by adding water and making the ink run.

Francis - Ditto on all the "I like your sketches" comments . How long ago did you do most of them, do you remember?

I don't know why, but I really like the pie sketch. Probably it appeals to my sense of humor.
