Um, drew this in photoshop, and then colored it htere. The color of the skin isn't the best. But this image is about the best I can do for myself without refrence.
What needs work?
To give you a little more info on my background, what really brought me back into art was 3D. I work with a software called Animation: Master, and, for a while, did a comic strip called TUGHouse using it. I had this crazy idea that reusing 3D models to do a comic strip would allow me to make strips faster and easier. Then I started reusing panels instead of creating new ones... and well, the comic was much more about the writing than the artwork. But check them out if you want a laugh and you're twisted.

Hi Jeremy! Why not use reference? Look
yourself in the mirror and study your proportions, shapes and flesh-tones and try to memorize what you see and after that try again without reference
The best would offcourse be to actually draw someone, draw yourself in front of a mirror for example.

The primary reason I want to learn to draw without refrence is that I want to be able to draw things in my imagination that don't exist- particularly people. It's really frustrating because I can see these really interesting images in my mind, but I don't ever get close to recording them on paper.
There's only so many things you can draw from refrence, I think. I'm doing both though! Don't get me wrong. I just want to be able to sit down and draw, for example, a dragon, without having to find one

JeremyT, Micke's advice is good.
Another thing to do is pick up some books on drawing figures. There is a really good book called "Bridgman's Life Drawing" that you can get for about seven bucks on amazon. It's a great book. You really need to practice visualizing and then drawing the head as a buildup of geometric shapes.
What are the shapes and what do they look like from different angles? There are some tutorials for heads somewhere on the forum. |
