Hi there.
Started this this evening. I'm not sure what to do yet, but if anyone can offer some crits or advice on the pic so far that would be cool.
I'm ashamed to say I threw a wobbly half way through this pic. I closed the pic when I wanted to test something, however, when I reloaded it, it was a pic from 30 mins earlier. OOOOOH I was angry!!!
there's a high-res one here

Wow, man, every pic you do is better than the last. The detail on this is awesome. I think it needs to be brought together more. The mountain/glacier/whatever could use some mist or something along the base to kind of make it look like it belongs there. The clouds are too sharp, too. They need to be blended in a bit, so they look like a part of the background and don't overtake the foreground so much. But it's definitely looking awesome so far. |

Hi... I Love your image!
Those cliffs are incredible. did you use any reference?
i really like the shape of the clouds, altough i think they could use some more definition in some of the shadows.
As to the composition- an object in the front of the image, concealing the right 1/4 of the image might do the trick..
Anyway- a great job, i love your style. |

ceenda - Niiice. The rock/glacier area looks especially good. I love the detail in the rocks.
Crits: The clouds are too hard-edged for my tastes. Also, is the glacier/mountain supposed to be floating? Right now it looks like it is. I would make it look more like it is going into the water. If it *is* supposed to be floating, I would make it more obvious. Maybe some other floating rocks, or some sort of machinery or generators underneath that would cause it to hover.
Looks nice though. I want to see it finished |

Very nice ... pretty vibrant colors too. Maybe to heighten the floating effect, you should work on the refelction a tad more ... Look at some reference for it - I usually find that very helpful ... Keep on rockin'! |

yeah just take your camera and shoot a floating island ;)
now that i think of it, is it supposed to be floating? :P
for the cloud, i think it should have some overall shading in addition of shading the individual puffs.. i mean that the shadow areas should probably be darker in some part of the cloud and lighter in another. also the shadows look perhaps a tad saturated.
dunno.
the cliffs really look great!

eetu: with looking at reference I meant looking at photographs of e.g. a tropical island in the water, checking how the reflections work, etc. ...
ceenda:
I tried to fuck around with the clouds a little bit - edges are really important on clouds - they're not all soft - they are a wierd mixture of whispiness and hard edges. I also changed the shadow color to something more grey. AND - I didn't look at any reference - ceenda - hope you don't mind me touching your image ...

whow thats really cool!
The first thing that came to my mind when I looked at it for just a second was the statue of liberty.. I guess its the color
Do you use the airbrush to finish things up or is it the paintbrush with low opacity?
Just you wait till I have my next mountain pic up |

u might want to put something on that mountain so u can tell the dimensions of it more.. right now the snow on the bottom looks a little more like it would be close up.. thus making the mountain look smaller
maybe u could wrap a little of the cloud around the top of that hmmm

What a perfect floating iceberg, it looks so good I'd like to have a bite! (I love the rocky stuff posted here recently, yours and Nex's in particular)
I was going to say something about the clouds and the water, but then I noticed Loki's remake... welp, I clearly don't have anything to offer over that

Thanks for all the replies. Work has been really busy (well, all except me ) so I haven't replied since I posted - err DOH!. Phew, quite a backlog here.
The island should be flying. Hence my website www.flyingislands.co.uk ... geddit?
Tinusch: Thanks for the crit, you're right though - however, the clouds do suck ass. The embarrassing thing is that the clouds were painted with regard to a referrence photo!
Bilbo: Thanks, I'm toying with yet another flying machine idea - gee wizz I'm fickle.
Manik Monkei: Cheers my man - patience is a virtue... you will see it finished sure enough.
psi burn: You kinda hit the nail on the head an loki sanded it down to a nice finish.
Loki: Those clouds took 30mins - 1 hour to do, and you go an make em look real in no time at all! You amaze me boy! You don't know how tempted I am to continue from your version...
eetu: yup, it is floating all right. I wish I could show you the version before I lost the previous version in Photoshop.
Nex: I used a loose arbrush to get the general areas of shade & went in later with a small airbrush at 100% opacity to put some crispness there.
shardik: I'm thinking of putting some Gothik structure at the top supported by huge struts. I'll try and make sure I don't trust a banana...
sfr: wrong thread to say this but I _really_ like that pic alot. great stuff.
klaivu: Thankyou, you're comments large or small are always appreciated.
el tigre: I think a shore would look good, but it might have to be a port/construction that touches the surface. BTW - are we the only Scots here? |

Hmmm You may want to dig out on some Magrite paintings. Specifically Le Chateau Des Pyrnes if you can find it.
I really liked his flying rocks altho he always seemed to paint the same kind of stone..
Cheers |

Hey Ceenda..
nice going there dude. The rocks are pretty sweet! However the lower bottom part could use some more work. Also be carefull of using too saturated colours. They'll start bleeding right of your screen. Loki did a decent job od toning that down somewhat. Looking forward to seeing how you'll further develop this image.. Keep going!
Danny
