Hi there.

I started this today but I don't know quite what to have the dockyard 'building' as such. A boat? A bizzarre airship? A submarine?

[EDIT] - this pic has been updated and uploaded a few times so you might want to hit refresh as your browser might be cacheing an older version.

I don't really know what you should do as far as the dockyard, but I definitely think that blue is a bit much. Way too strong and bright. I think the pic would be MUCh better if the blue was toned down a lot.

Tinusch: I've de-saturated the blue a bit.

Looks good. Why did you choose to use outlines on the crane though? The rest of the image is defined through form, value and color, and is quite effective and 'solid'. I don't think you need the line work on the crane.

How about the 'crane' as a gallows for some giant medieval-styled mecha? Might be kinda surreal as an image...

WacoMonkey: I kinda did the crane last minute using the selection tools. I'll so the crane again and make it more ornate this time round as it looks out of place.

Your gallows suggestion has given me an idea.

How about a sea monster that has been caught and hauled in to shore?

Maybe something a bit differnet here but how about a hanging light house? In the picture it is quite difficult to tell size as there is no relation to anything we can put a human size to. So my idea would be to have a hanging lighthouse. We all know about what size a lighthouse is and it would give the entire picture a massive scale.

By the way like the STRONG colors.

Aloys Crunch: Yeah, I always get caught out with that one.

I like Roger Dean's stuff a lot. His site seems to be down right now which is a shame.

Darkman: I like the hanging lighthouse idea.

That's pretty nice I like the colours. It remind me a lot of the production painting of Jabbas palace from ROT.

There is something about the mountains. They dont look big enough. Maybe it's the way they are shaded(to softly) that makes them look that way.I would also go easily on the cracks.

Like what you've done so far, nice strong colours. As to what could be being built, how about some sort of archaic looking mechanoid like the ones in the Japanese animation Giant Robo.

Ceenda,

I think you should throw in a balloon type airship on an approach to dock with the crane. I was wondering if you had Bryce 3D cause if you did then you can create some water (reel easy to do) and then drop it in place. You'll probably have to work on top of it alittle so everything works together as one piece. The rock in the bkg also has a really hard edge so you might want to soften it up a bit. Looking forward to seeing how it all works out in the end.

Late,

Thanks to everyone for their ideas and comments.

I've taken some of the crits into account and updated the picture (refresh your browser window if the pic with the old version of the crane with struts is showing).

I think I'll go for the hanging lighthouse as I find the idea intriguing. I could have a giant bowl with a beacon in it, like a censer.

Mergatroid : The airship in the distance would definately give a good sense of scale to the pic. Nice one!

Lots of great ideas. The image has heaps of potential. but for me everything looks miniture. I'm not sure how big the structure is supposed to be, but if it's menat to be really big then I would suggest putting in a lot more little details. Just suggestions of smaller parts and little things. you'll find that putting a few little bits and pieces in makes a big difference.

If however your going for a wierd surreal quality then disreguard this.
