After taking a look at affected's self-portraits, i wanted to do something similar. I think this is the first time I really painted with colors instead of just coloring a b/w work afterwards. well, i know there must be errors, so would somebody be kind enough to point them out ?
photo reference here.

That's great. The hair is awesome! The colors are perfect. The smile is exaggerated a bit, but other than that it looks really good. Could use some cleaning up around the outline of the hair, though. |

Yep, that's pretty damn cool. Couldnt see anything wrong besides the fact that he seems to be having a full-blown acid-happy-trip. |

Very good, I agree. I don't mind the smile, either, it fits. That's a big forehead, though.

I can't tell what's different, but his forehead looks huge in your pic...I'm gonna line them up in Photoshop, I'll reply again later with what the hell makes it look like that...
[Edit: Hmmm...just the hair line. It's only off by a little bit though, maybe 20-30 pixels, dunno why it creates the illusion of a huge forehead to me, lol.]

The most amazing thing just happened to me...I was typing this post, and I had a pencil hanging from my lip...well long story short, the pencil fell out of my mouth, bounced off my knee, landed on my power bar under the desk, and shut everything off. An itty bitty 2B design pencil. Only two inches left on the thing. How that happened I will never know...but it was pretty unreal...
Back to the crit...I love this image. I really like the expression you caught, although the mouth is a bit cartoony. It adds to the overall expression. The one thing that really bothers me though, and I see this all the time, is the cheek plane running straight into the ear. There needs to be a firm edge of the cheek color and value running right up to the tragus of the ear. The nob that sits in front of the ear orafice...And you need to firm up the hair line on that side too. This will define the side plane of the portrait much nicer.
Great job though over all. Really nice expression... |

Well, thanks for the comments, everyone !
I will try and fix this one someday..
Fred : you know, reading your post, I somehow felt that that little accident was kind of my fault.. I seem to be somewhat jinxed when it comes to computers. An example : one day, having destroyed the windows registry by installing new devices ( still wondering how the hell that happened ), I tried to find new drivers on another computer : Someone asks if I crashed my machine and I say that I just seem to have extremely bad luck with computers, and just when I finish that sentence, the comp crashes..

Looks very nice Klaivu. The fact is that it seems like it's a bit exaggerated from the photo (is it ?) though it looks real. Which is a kind of caricature style I really like.
very nice!
Like you said, this is the first image you've painted without making it in greyscale first (I guess you didn't mean pencil sketching). I really think you should continue this path and don't paint things is greyscale any more, unless you want them to be black and white in the end.
when doing it like that, you either just create twice as much work for yourself, or the image turns out like those black and white films that has been coloured...-hard to make believable, if you know what I mean.
