Hi there. My name is Virotype (real name Matt). You all probably don't know me but I've been around the online gaming scene for about 5 years or so. I've been doing digital/3d art for about 2-3 years now, but it has mostly been centered in web graphics for fast loading etc. Recently I got back into 3dstudio max, photoshop, and PSP6. I don't have a Wacom tablet yet cause I haven't saved up enough money so I have to use my mouse for now, but check out this drawing I did today. I drew it in my sketchpad and then scanned it in and edited it in JASC paint shop pro 6. Took me about 4 hours I think. As the image says, please disregard the hair (and ear!) because I haven't started editing those yet. Noticibly absent is the eye as well.. Any critique/comments would be appreciated and also any tips! Thanks

It's a bit too light. I would suggest darkening the colors as it would add more depth to your work. Right now it looks somewhat...flat.

Welcome Virotype!
I'm sure you'll continue to enjoy what this wonderful forum and all its groovy members have to offer!
I'm glad you joined the party!
My suggestion would be to imagine this character is real - and then imagine this character had a drafting lamp straight above him or her. Now...
Draw the shadows. Draw the highlights. Make them dark, make them light - make them too much - it's okay.
I think this will add contrast, which will do 2 things for you (I think):
1. Your lines and rendering seem shy to me - not confident enough. Don't worry about whether something is too dark or light right now. Don't be so careful - just play! Learn the boundaries before you try to stay within them. Know what I mean?
2. Your picture will have more depth.
Now, this is only my opinion, and this is only an exercise - and this may not be the lighting you want for this picture - but I am looking at this as an attitude towards drawing any picture. Not to mean "draw everything as if a lamp was above it" but to experiment and don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Over time, your technique will focus as you learn more skills and are exposed to other artists. Just don't be too cautious at this stage...
Know what I mean?
Keep painting!

Hey Virotype!
I guess what Virus-type you might be counted to.. Staphyllokokkus? Staphyllophagus?
I agree with kurisu-san about the faint colors. Just put them right up there.. 100% no retreat no surrender
I think you will profit greatly from fred's head drawing tutorial in this forum. Just check it out.
Else .. welcome on board.

Thanks for the critique and help guys! I worked on this image a bit more, restructured her face a bit. I still haven't gotten to her hair/eyes but it is looking a LOT better. Tell me what you think about this new one. I definitly like it a lot better.

Ahh! Better!
Ok.. now on to step 2:
eyes hair-- you know already.
The ear should go more back,
and add some eyebrows.
YOu would get a more female "cute" look if the tip of her nose would point a bit up and if her nose would be a bit shorter.
Just continue practicing.. you're improving here
