I've got 3 weeks to finish my portfolio for an animation school. I have been requested to send a storyboard, a self-portrait and maximum 10 different works of mine. I would like to get recommendations on what the 10 different works should be, I got a lot of sketches, but I want to show them I can do more than just that. Any advices?

Hmm, I've never sent any portfolio to any school. But, when I worked for a disney game, I visited the Orlando Feature animation department.
I talked with an animator and a producer, and they both said ( for an animator offcos)that they really don't care about anything else than quick motion sketches and figuredrawings (Shapes and motion). They showed me a few portfolios and gave me one that the disney company had smacked together with different sketches from both the hotshots and others to give an example of what they look upon as a good portfolio. So, I guess this portfolio would also be something a school would think is good as well.
I hope this can help

In my school, the Academy of Fine arts, there is a animation studies program.
When they had "evaluation" test, they had to draw a head, a statue (that was in front of them) in 6 different poses, and some still life.
I would recommend drawings of hands, portraits, quick MOTION skecthes (don't be bothered with anatomy), just get the fell that the character is moving. Also I would recommend figure studies (if you can find a place where you can draw naked ppl - or atleast try to draw looking yourself in the mirror - nude ofcourse). I did that thing when I was making a portfolio.
Dunno, I hope it helps.
Best of luck

That is very cool Joachim. Do you or anyone else have any other portfolios lying around? They are a great learning tool. |

spooge, here's the sketches in twice as big. Hope that is ok. Hmm, they get a bit bad in quality, since it's copied not print on paper.
Also, I forgot to include a couple of pages, sorry. The first page was pretty important info for you PST. Hope you can manage to read out from this bad quality scan.
Chapel, offcourse I got a lot of stuff like this I collected in up my years (like I'm sure everybody else has as well). Actually, I stole a bunch of sketches when I worked with Disney (I just couldn't help myself ), they caught me, but since I had such such a guilty look on my face they let me keep it all -almost, hehe
Anyway, here's the whole god damn portfolio:

Thanks alot Joachim, you could not have explained it better than with these sketches. They have totally changed my drawing technique!
If Spooge got similar sketches, I would love to see them! Thanks again!
