Well, I did this one pretty recently--so I figure I might as well post it. I know most of you guys are pretty hardcore about 2D CG..but this is (obviously) a 3D piece. I still consider myself a beginner (late beginner perhaps, but still...been doing this for a while, but mostly up til now it's been a learning process with not too much to show for it).

So here goes.

Now, they're untextured..but I actually like how that worked out with these, gives them a pretty soft plastic look. These were done in Rhino 1.0 if anyone is interested.

Comments/Suggestions/Rants are welcome, though I consider this piece done--sorta atleast, it should be part of my next 3D CG piece, part of a scene.

Thanks...

Grift^

I'm not sure why the image isn't loading--but anyway, it's sitting at http://members.tripod.com/grift.tek/guns.jpg if anyone cares.

Aaargh! Little red crosses!! I really hate them! Aaargh!

Anyway, I find it always sad for a person if he don't get any replies, especially for a junior member. So let me be the first reply...

Well, I'm not really into that 3d stuff so I can't give you any advice. The pic seems fine to me...that's the only thing I've got to say. Maybe another person can give you critique now. After all, this topic is now placed in the upper place of this MB...

BTW, try working with Satan, -(well, I've heard that once)- Geocities...hmm? It's just a suggestion...

virtuacop!
looks very good.. how long did it take you, and what program did you use? I really suck at technical modelling so some pointers on how you did this would be appreciated..

Great models! Polygon or NURBS?
here are my suggestions.
the shadows are killing this image...
use some more lighting, Put a spot light in the scene to highlight the edges of the pistols (rim lights). Dark lighting is good to hide flaws, but not needed here.
use some lights that don't cast shadows for top, bottom etc. imagine these are setting on a light box with a nice diffused light from below.
I'm glad you didn't put them on a square plane with sharp edges.
If you're new to lighting, try experimenting with colored lights, use red, green, blue..what ever for your lights, this will help you judge where the lights run into eachother and also where to add or take away lights, then change the lights back to the original color.
IF you want a better representation of your models, put a "blinn" shader on them, a dark grey with a very very slight blue specularity. Then use the same color for a light or two. And throw in a light yellowish directional light(ambient light)(very light yellowish) this will make them look more metallic.
It's a whole other story after you add textures, but play around with some of what I mentioned and see what you get.

Fragamite: I thought someone might recognize them . I'd say total this was about three nights work, each session a couple of hours--but a lot of that was re-learning Rhino. That is software I used btw.. to answer your other question, their website can be found at www.rhino3d.com. I highly recomend their package for modeling, but I do feel the need to state that the programs renderer is sorta week--no reflections, among some other faults. But, in addition to that, they make it fairly easy to export their models.

Samdragon: Thanks for the suggestions. Rhino is pretty much exclusively a NURBS application. I see what you're saying about the lighting, and I might mess around with it a bit to try and get some of the effects that you're talking about in.. I sorta like the dramatic lighting in this shot though, the whole composition might seem a little cliche but I like the 'graphic' nature of the finished product.

I plan on doing a full scene with this one, with the rest of the console.. model a sega saturn, a desk surface, some games etc. for the final final product.. and I'll probably render it in 3dsmax where I'll have a bit better control over the texturing and the lighting.

But again, thanks a ton for the feedback.. it's allways super helpful.

Even as a lurker I've found this site extremely educational--thanks all,

Grift^
