I've been lurking here for a while--checking up every once and a while.. I'm not too much a digital artist right now, although my goal in life is to be a 3D CG guy, and I do do it as a hobby I've been focusing more on my sketchbook--trying to master the basics before I jump ahead of myself.
I've got a question about Wacom tablets. I see these new Graphire tablets--and the 4x5's are extremely cheap ($70). I have a Calcomp 6x9 w/ a 256 pressure level stylus, but the stylus is damaged and the replacement is going to cost me around $60...
So basically, what I'm getting at is--would it make sense to go ahead and get the Graphire, even though the serface area is smaller? I'll probably continue to do most of my 2D art traditionally anyway, but I'm interested in fidling with Painter some more, it's been a while. The Graphire has a 512 level pen--the Calcomp a 256 level...the Graphire comes with a three button cordless mouse and some software...The Calcomp is effectively costing me $60...etc etc
So--I'm confused. Recomendations?

Molly is on vacation in Bangalore, recovering from a nervous breakdown. When she comes back, she'll seriously consider doing a Wacom FAQ.

Actually, as far as I know, Calcomp doesnt exist anymore. I have a 4x5 Calcomp tablet and when I lost my divers and went to their site I was redirected to some other company that had happened to mirror the drivers when calcomp stopped providing them.
I know a number of people with Wacom tablets, and I must say they work a lot better than my calcomp, So I'd go for the wacom, or even go with a bigger wacom tablet, they can't cost that much more. |

Unfortunately, they do cost a lot more... The Graphire is really nice, because it's cheap and works great. It may not have as many pressure levels or as much work area, but it's still good enough to make some nice pics with. The larger tablets, especially the Intuos line, are quite expensive. Even old used Artpads from eBay are expensive... |
