great stuff as usual! I'm a little currious about the places where the water meets the hull of the boat. It's too flat looking, maybe add some more deformation of the water as it hits the hull..But i'm being really picky there.

Lotor - AliasMoze and I are working on an inhouse cartoon series called High Seas. We can't really tell you too much about it, but we should have a preview ready to premiere by the World Animation Celebration.

Samdragon, thanks for the reply and I agree, but that kind of detail for online delivery is just prohibitive at this point. We're pushing it as it is just to get this much production value in there.

But we're looking to improve the series as we go along, and luckily the detail builds on itself, so as we go along those things will add up and carry into the next show. We're just praying for high bandwidth penetration for everyone by the end of the month

Moze:

Is the ship (and most of the other backgrounds) rendered in 3D?

I can't see how you could be producing this kind of detail (without the help of a huge group of Korean animators) without it?

BTW, beautiful cels! VERY cinematic!

Genesequence,

Thanks for the compliment, but the ship is hand painted, along with all the backgrounds and hand-drawn animation.

As it happens, Alias and I are both half-Korean, which means together we make one whole Korean, which gives us an edge

We're mostly drawing on our production experience than from anything we've seen online (including the shows we do for our clients), so we want it to look like a cartoon, and not a "Flash" cartoon.

Ah yes, the scourge of being "half-something". Alas, I am half-Japanese, and so by heredity, I am unable to draw faces in which the eyes make up less than 60% of the total facial area. What are we to do...

Here's another pic from the show. This is from one of the opening shots.

We're trying to get a nice cinematic feel.

Can't wait to be able to show you guys the whole show.

The only thing NOT hand-drawn is the water. It was done CG, then converted through an agonizing process to the vector form you see in the picture.
Sam, the water at the base of the ship is bright in the picture, but I recolored it to match the rest more.
BTW, a 3D model like this would have been much more difficult to build than was the painting to paint.

Anyway, thanks for the comments! We really appreciate it.

Real nice Moze! But that crashing water at the hull of the ship seems overlit... you'll never get anything brighter than the ambiant color in this case, unless the object is lit, glows or has a specular or reflection of some light source (which doesn't seem to be the case). Aside from that, it's very nice! Can't wait to see the complete thing! (oh, a reflection would have been nice, but I guess it would have made the scene that much bigger for flash animating. =)

cheers,
frost.

Hey Frost;

Alias already recolored the water at the base of the hull. I believe this was the "stand-in" water in this pic.

I agree with the idea of the reflection, but I don't think it would be an actual reflection so much as a dark shadow or something. You don't get a lot of reflections on ocean surfaces.

Thanks for the feedback. We're making some editorial changes right now, but we should be posting up the preview for you guys to look at soon - maybe in a week or so.

You guys are hand-painting every frame at that detail? You guys are nuts! (and I say that in the best way ) The color and lighting look really good, has a nice cinematic "night shot" look to it (a lot of 10K's with blue gels). Will the ship be emerging from the fog?

Btw. I'm half jamaican and half french. I have no idea how that influences my drawing!!!

Salty Dog, hahahaha. We do the outside projects for Camp Chaos.

WacoMonkey, the ship is only painted once and moves like a sprite. It looks pretty good though. Most people who've seen the animation think it's 3D. I guess that's a good thing. Jamaican and French? Bonjour, mon!

Thanks for the comments. Hope everyone can see it sometime soon...

Hey Wacomonkey;

Thanks for the comments. It was a real bitch lugging those 10k's into my office just for that shot - but worth it!

Frost;

How did you link us to Camp Chaos? Did you see our name in some credits to something? Not that I mind, I just don't remember any links set up between the our site or e-mail and Camp Chaos.

Moze: Camp Chaos.. I didn't, in fact, I don't even know what Camp Chaos is. It's twice that my name get used in threads or subjects I have nothing to do with. Maybe your computers are on the fritz. =) So no, I didn't mention anything of the sort.

cheers,
frost.
