i started shading in his pic, and smoothing things out.. tell me what u think. help and comments are always apreciated. thnx.
btw, since the backgruond's not there yet, lemme just tell u that her legs are supposed to be submerging in water. and i'll draw her legs in really soon.
while i'm at it, could u guys please tell me what i could improve on this pic? i only put 4 hours of work into it to get it in for the deadline, and plan to fully finish it (fallout contest). thanks.

I think the top pic is coming alone great. The shading is awesome.
As for the bottom one, it's really good. I'd suggest putting more detail into the dude's pants and maybe define the lighting and shadows more, like you did on his helmet and shoulder. |

thanks for the reply.
frost: i wanted to focus on trying to get a sense of photorealism in the first pic. any suggestions for a background? lately, i was thinking of maybe having her on a double bed, and have some sheets cover her legs. the drapery of the cloth would add a better sense of realism, than if i tried to draw water, which i never attemped before.

The top one is really good round the stomach and the legs. I really like the bottom one although i think there should be something (or maybe just a peek) of what it is by his feet that seems to be freaking him out. |

Dakkan: Funny you mentioned that bed with legs covered idea ... (bedgirl) ... it's not very nice but it was my first painting after seeing Craig's stuff, which affected me deeply to say the least.
For water, I assume you'd need to do some caustics, especially near the intersection of water to her legs, where that little rim of water sort of slightly wraps around the leg (what they call a 'minicus' if I recall properly from chemistry class). That's something I haven't really looked into myself, but from what I gather, it just distorts the vision in a way that can be traced in 3D by imagining the face normals orientation or the surface vectors giving an offset angle to the view your seeing at that location. I don't know much about that really, but it would be technically interesting to learn how caustics work (at least, more or less) so you could implement in future drawings such features.
Sorry if I may have lost you in all this, but I also learn a lot from 3D and Raytracing software, where such effects as caustics, lighting, radiosity, etc are calculated using real mathematical equasions -- by looking at the geometry and surface properties and the results, you can see or have a better undertanding as to how things work... you can even CHANGE the geometry for some test cases and see the results if you have specific questions...
Anyway, just a few learning tricks.
cheers.
frost.
