Well, you have to of course have a concept in your mind before you set out to put it on paper. I guess my question is after the conceptual stage is, "how to draw to get the point across", and a is there material or books that catalogs the process that conceptual designers go through from start to finish. Like a tutorial for conceptual artist that want to further increase there drawing ability, and highten there over all "concept to presentation". Kinda flaky but if anyone knows of some good info about this it would be greatly appreciated. |

check out all "The art of Starwars" books.
They are rich on concept art, character designs, vehicles and architecture.
They are very good.

this is less of a technical response, and more of a "get out there and become absorbed!" ..... Reading up on excellent conceptual artists is a start, and since you're interested in this field, they will probably be familiar to you. (If not, here ya go
Syd Mead http://www.sydmead.com/
Great futurist. Works such as Blade Runner, Aliens, and even Gundam! If you can't afford his gorgeous books, his site offer some nice inspiration pictures.
H.R Giger
His Alien organic work speaks for itself. http://www.hrgiger.com/alien.htm
Craig Mullins http://www.goodbrush.com/
Of course, Mr. Mullins is no stranger to this board, and a house hold name. His web site is excellent showcase on how he carries his ideas across.
Once again, more of a reference rather than a technical point of view, but at any rate, I do hope this helps.

As previewly mentioned, the Art Of Starwars series is excellent although the pick of the set is the one for 'Episode 1: the Phantom Menace' which has some of the best designs I've seen. I regularly refer to it for *ahem* inspiration.
The Syd Mead books mentioned above are also incredible but most of them are very costly. If you can't afford the big Kronoteko and Kronovecta set (big but expensive), then Oblagon is a very good all-round alterantive at a good price. (Theres a new Mead book coming out soon.)
Another good one to look out for is The Making Of Judge Dredd which is has lots of great high-tech designs from leading comic artists.
Check out http://impact.frag.com/sumaleth/sumabooks.htm for more. And remember, if you buy books through my page I get money .
Rowan.

Studio Images 1/2/3, combined, probably have a comparable amount of pencil drawings to Oblagon but they are very thin books and are quite expensive for whats in them (I found the print quality to be a little poor too).
If you're after -just- pencil/pen conceptual drawings from Sir Mead then 'Kronovecta (Concept Designs Of Syd Mead)' is the one to get - it's a FAT book comprised of entirely that sort of work (Kronoteko is a similar book except it has all color art) from all the movies he had worked on up till 92 and lots of other projects. It's not cheap though, and as far as I know can only be purchased from his web site.

I'll get Oblagon then. I'm after b/w concepts but Kronovecta is out of reach for me, too expensive. I will order some books from your site. |
