Sex, love, death, infinity, furry animals and fascist mindcontrol. These are some of the profound themes covered by the now completed "broken television" art chain. Go see for yourself:
http://www.saunalahti.fi/saffron/tv/

This was a group project for Sijun.com folks, here's the original thread that spawned it.

So, this thread is for you to share your comments and opinions with the world. And if anyone wants to do this again, I've got some suggestions for possible rules... (for this first attempt there were no rules, which at least yielded esoteric results )

Hmm, seems most people didn't understand the idea at all . Took a bad turn as early as image three...

Oh well.

Sumaleth: there were no rules.

Thank god this shows we don't all have the same universal mind.

I think it turned out cool..

wow hey, thats neat. I am glad i got to take part in this. hehe it was taking so long i slopped something together to keep it moving so i feel retarded now but i still kept up with the theme.

i find it incredibly interesting to follow and i enjoy looking at these.

you begin to wonder: what's a dog with part of its mouth on the floor have to do with hitler and his toys?

someone told me that they think lemur-x completely changed everything, and i told them yes they are right. isn't that how its supposed to be? that's how he perceived the previous image, and i see nothing wrong with it. i like it, personally.

kurisu, hehe that fat kid makes me giggle.

BOTTOM LINE: I WANT MORE!

geez, things got biological awful quick didn't they.

I am glad it didn't just turn out to be versions of the same idea though.

I have a suggestion for the next one; borrowing from the "Chinese whispers" ( racist name we had for them down here, way back when) /"Broken telephone" idea more closely, we get an odd number of people in the chain. Then the first person draws a pic and the next person describes it to the next artist, then we go through the list again so everyone has a go at drawing.

I'll explain that a little better. We have a chain of five people (could be lots more, but just for an example) Saffron, kurisu, micke, tinusch & synj.
Say Saffron starts; draws whatever he wants;
he then gives the pic to kurisu who has to write a description of the pic that's about 3 sentences long, trying to be as accurate as he can.
kurisu then gives this description to micke who draws a picture based on it.
micke gives this pic to Tinusch, who tries to describe it as best he can to synj.
synj draws his pic and gives it saffron. saffron tries as best he can to describe the pic to kurisu, who then draws it.
And so on, until everyone has drawn something.
Am I making sense? Then we put up the pics and the descriptions.

Sure its complicated, and with the non english speakers and the abstract minds around here the results will be even more off the wall than the current one. But it could be a fun twist.
Tell me what y'all think.

Lemur-X, I liked the mood change that your pic brought! And synj and kurisu are right: when you give complete freedom of interpretation, you can't come complaining later when people use it as they see fit

Anyways, here are some points perhaps worth considering for the next round(?)...

- Should any restrictions be placed on the changes between pictures? For example something like "you must completely change at least one of the following (and also retain at least one of them): layout, motif, color scheme"...

- Overpainting... Now maybe a third of the images were overpaints (=not started from scratch). Should overpainting be forbidden, to make the chain progress more smoothly?

- Auctioning the places - I tried this for the last 5 places in the chain, and it did go much faster than with predistributed places. (The "auction" simply means this: for each place in the chain, I send a mail to everyone who hasn't yet contributed, and if you have time do a pic now, you send me a reply. If you're the first one to reply, you get that place.) So I'd suggest using this system for the next chain too...

Muzman, your idea is good as well, and would be worth trying... And Francis, I'm very tempted to give that animated short idea a try myself

Ya, lemur-x. dont sweat it. You didn't do anything wrong! just wanted to bring it up since i argued with someone about it. It's all about how you perceived the image, not duplicating it (i think).

I think this one went pretty well and I am up for another.

Yeah, it certainly mutated a lot... A dog? Heh.

I think that's a good thing, though. I worked from my interpretation of the previous image, attempting to convey a related message instead of trying to copy the image. Not exactly what the idea of 'broken telephone' is, but since part of the original game is that you may only whisper the message once to the next person, causing the message to change due to misunderstandings, and that wouldn't work when people can look at the previous persons' image as much as they want, I think the rules need to be tweaked a little to suit this medium. And I don't like simply copying other people's images and ideas, it's boring.

I guess if this is done again, some rules might be a good idea, also regarding the time each person is allowed to make the image.

Sorry if I made the images stray from the original idea, but you must understand that the image I got in my box was a couple of people bumping uglies in a dirty/uncomfortable place. I'm not one to draw people bumping uglies, and was strapped for time (13 hour work days ) So I simply tried to sketch the feeling you get when you're with that certain someone.....

Sorry if it got botched.

Hey Lemur-X - NO WORRIES!!!!

Don't let anyone get you down. You did nothing wrong It's all about interpretation. How can anyone define what's a 'right' or a 'wrong' interpretation. It's art Baby - YEAH!!!

This is the first TV Chain here... so there's bound to be kinks in the process. That's why we'll just have to do another one

This should be fun! Those who complain aren't helping facilitate what this whole thing is about!
