I have a question on how to draw hair. Just from pencil. I can't do it! Is their any pointers/proper techniques anyone can suggest? Any great sites for facial drawings? One more question, what do you people use to draw with?
Thank you!

Hi there,
I think with pencil you just have to draw each strand and make your strokes flow in the direction the hair is flowing. Example:
And I use a 2B 0.5 pacer to draw with. It's fine, dark and you don't need to sharpen it. hehe

hi,
Dark hair is All back Little High lights (use a Eraser with Sharp Edge)
I use a .7 click pencil... I start out with Lightly toching the paper then GO over it with more lines and more lines and more lines every time geting little bit more darker..
Use a Photo To look at?
Ohh yah and it will really really really help, if you Move the pencil the way the hair is going... Let your pencil make the haircurves.. dont just SHADE left to right..
Yah thats all i can say on less your need more help?
Here a little image i used light Shading then went over it with a Eraser.

Thanks for the tips people! The more the merrier! When I get time I'll post a few pics I drew. I drew one of Joe Satriani, he turned out good, but the guy, he looks funny to start out with. :P Oh, whats a kneading eraser for? I might have a rough idear but not sure...
Thanks a bill-

The stuff that looks like plastic explosives It's commonly used in combination with charcoal for a nice smudge.

Drawing each strand separately is a bad idea in my opinion. Here's a pencil drawing by me (drawn from live model), it's quite bad overall but I sort of like the hair:
I'm not saying this is the way to draw hair. Just suggesting that it might be a better approach to concentrate on larger clumps of hair and the way their highlights and shadows go, rather than each individual strand.

Ozmosis :could it be you've got your name from a track of the CD "Liquid Tension Experiment" ?
I thought since you draw Satriani you might know this CD as well.

i read somewhere that you'll have to draw hair as a mass, not as single strokes...
if you have got the right shape just stroke in the direction you whish the hair to go

That must be an older Satriani track, I never heard of that one, I love all his new stuff, especially on Cyrstal Planet! I just saw him in concert last fri, sssooo cool. Anywho, my name is inspired from osmosis, from biology last year. I just swapped the s with a z, and *bam!* ozmosis.

Ditto what saffron said. You have to treat hair as a "mass". The amount of subdivision in the mass depends one what kind of hair. Envision how the hair would look if it was plastic, w/out any strands. Try and draw that, then draw in a few strands in the direction the hair is flowing, w/ highlights and transparent areas and then the final touches.
