Good pic, I like the mood. I'm no artist, but I think it needs a better background. A moon or something, I guess.

It's actually a foggy night and part of an animated series. So the establishing shots will show the fog, etc.

Thanks for the correction Loki.

ALiasMoze, could I use your picture as the basis for a column that I am writing for 3dpalette. com? You will get full credit. A crit provided in that venue will be in a lot more depth than a few lines here. I will be redoing the pic from scratch, as well.

Sounds fine to me. But please keep in mind this is a background painting. So the painting is not as dynamic as a stand-alone.

Oh boy! Duck & cover, Alias ... you provided Craig with the right fodder - dark moody lighting

Btw ... I like your painting - it's a little bit smooth though. And you might want to check on the lantern - the light can of course be yellowish, but I usually choose warmer yellow to make it less 'lemonny'. Also - the yellow light would color it's surrounding with the same color.

Your lighting is very nice other than that. What I would recommend though, that you when you paint shadows, check exactly where the light is coming from - happens to me too btw - because the mainshadow that's being cast by the stair-handles is too steep.

After that - just add a little bit of detail in the sky, ropes hanging down from the not visible masts/sails in the foreground and you should have an even finer image.

Hope you don't mind me deconstructing your image

Rock on!

Loki,
Not at all. Thanks for the feedback.
I especially agree with making the light warmer.
I'm actually aware of the lighting inconsistencies. I originally did this one "for day" and had to convert to a night shot. So, for many reasons, the lighting is way off. Also, the rigging simply hasn't been added yet.
Having said all that, I would love to have Mullins or any master reconstruct this painting.
Again, thanks for the very constructive criticism

Loki,
Man, I've posted to my message more than anyone. What a loser I am.

Anyway, I just took a gander at your sight. You're very, very good. I'm a decent illustrator but have no training in painting at all (first background less than a year ago); I paint very infrequently.

But I'm looking to get better and looking to people like CM and yourself for advice.
Again, your stuff is great!

Stand alone, painting, that's fine. Any other resrictions? Just the back end of a boat? How much time have you been able to spend on it? The style looks like naturalistic animation.

Spoogedemon,
Um, I spent too much time on it (fumbling around in PS), about 6 hours or so.
The only other restrictions for me were that I'm painting a series of these for day and converting to night. Each one will be cropped, as needed, for reuse. There are many reusable elements, like barrels and rigging that can be added on top, etc.
As far as the style goes, I'm kind of winging it, but going for a Disney-esque look.

I look forward to seeing this painting done better. BTW, if you're CM, then I apologize for misspelling your name

My biggest problem is a lack of technique. I spend way to much time trying to define shapes and make small tweaks. So I end up doing exactly the wrong thing, which is focusing on individual elements. Oh well...

Thanks for your help!

Alias: Thanks - just wait what Craig will do w/ your image!

Spooge: when you do this column, could you go a little bit into how you determine the values for a painting. I'm sure it's more or less automatic for you, but do you have any pointers/tricks/help of how to stay in natural values when doing a painting?

Thanks!

Hey Spooge ... More on the value take, I really found it interesting when you mentioned, treat value and color separately -- I had always done the opposite, -- I'm not sure if it's been done already, but I would love to see that advice in depth.

Thanks kindly,

JJ
