Hey, hello out there!
I'm not really new to this forum, I was lurking for a year now, I guess. But this is my first post. Well, here is my question. I made a pic of a human head. But you know it looks a bit too smooth. I guess the detail is missing. But I have some problems with that. I mean skin is flat. You can't add some detail like gaps, hills or ... I dunno.
So what is to do to let it look more realistic.

Sorry I can't show you the pic, 'cause I have no homepage. But I won't decline some space for that pic, if someone wants to offer me.

Excuse my english. I'm from germany *g*

Send me your image at [email protected] and I'll look it up and even host it on my webspace for others to look at if you like.

Well, skin isn't that flat. It's constantly dying, layer by layer, so there are cracks in it, pores, slight discolorations... think about when you get goosebumps... now remember that all those discolorations must always exist, only not quite as much contrast... and there are small, blond hairs on the face... peach fuzz, really... maybe some freckles...

That said, don't overdo it, or you'll end up with a rather freaky character...

Hey, here is my Pic. So perhaps you now can tell me what you would do on it. Thanks for the replies so far. I think it looks like it made a way thru a washingmachine.

If you want to learn how to draw lifelike faces (even cartoon lifelike) The best thing to do is to *practice* painting them. Try to work off of black and white photos, til you get comfortable with light and shadows. Then move on to color photos to work on color selection and blending. Do a few of each, and I assure you, you will know how to paint faces. Trying to work skin colors and shadows/highlights into a face without any reference experience is a waste of time. Learn the concepts of light, dark, color, and then you will save yourself a lot of grief.

What Xcal said .

You have to draw from observation. Photos will be easiest for you because they are 2d. Starting with black and white images is a great start. Then color if you wish. After some experience in color, try to draw real life objects/people. Translating 3d to 2d can be difficult and requires time and effort.

Drawing is a skill like any other, meaning it can be learned (poo to the naysayers who claim it as an innate talent!). And if you really want to get into art, you really have to go through the basic steps.

Regards.

p.s. i'm no expert on the matter but if you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me.

Here is one thing I thought might look better, the eye. It should be slimmed a bit, since the eye is a sphere and this eye is looking to the left.
