A quick question regarding copyright. I work for a design firm, which occassionally asks my co-workers and myself for any of our persoanl artwork we would like to contribute for print promotions they may have, so on and so forth. As far as ownership of the art, who has it? The reason I ask is because the firm puts copyrights on all their printed material stating the artwork is their property. Does my ownership end when I give permission to them to use it????? |

That probably depends on the contract you have. Why not ask them?

We do not have freedom. We have rules and oppression and where the oppression is less visible we believe to have found freedom.

I've been working in the graphics design industry for nearly five years, and unless otherwise stated by contract or similar means, any design/artwork is your property and does not belong to the company that you work for, even though you get paid to do it and they get the big bucks for it.
I don't remember the exact rules/laws applicable...
But basically you still have the copyright on any given material.
(Atleast you do in Denmark)

Thanks affected, I just needed another opinion. I did ask, and the parameters were layed out regarding artwork created on the payroll and artwork created personally. A seperate coypright was included to insure safety. They thought I did the artwork on their time, so they felt they owned it. It goes to show that you just can't assume things in this business or I guess any other, cause you dont know what the hell your bosses are thinking.
