Hi board
I recently turned down a freelance job. In retrospect, I think I made a wise choice. You can read the entire email exchange here and judge for yourself.
In addition, I was hoping that those of you with web pages might provide a link to this page, sort of as a public service announcement to the digital artist community.
Thanks for your time everyone.
Francis

wants you to prove yourself to him first, ha! just look at your previous body of work and other concept sketches for companies, that more then speaks for itself. looks like he was just tryin to gank (that an adjective?) free work off a good artist, that or he doesnt have much money for payment..

I agree. I've seen that many times...people aren't willing to pay for art. He also seemed to have the biggest problem with revisions. That is standard freelance protocol. They get 2 maybe 3 revisions. If they're still not pleased, they pay extra. I guess he's not really knowledgeable on such things. Good call to turn him down. There is no need to burn bridges because someone turns your offer down. Sheesh. |

Between the lines, I think that guy should be hitting up more funding/investors before he worries about anything else. George Washington talks, bullshit walks..
BTW, that animated gif cracked me up!

hmm.. This Justin lad seems to pop up everywhere. He's been annoying people on the CG-Char mailinglist from time to time for atleast a year now...(to the point of almost being shitlisted by the lists' administrator)

Good call, I think.
I've found that potential clients can
get pretty cranky if they don't hear
what they want to hear, or because
you won't drop everything to meet their
specific needs. |

i have gone through that SO many times.
seems like everyone's out to get a free lunch off some poor graphic artist... and when they talk all super-business-like, i just know to watch out even more. that guy's a tool. if he's a member of THIS forum, i'd suggest "letting him go" immediately. |

Justin needs to be rung out. He's a bit wet around the ears, too much latte'. You know those director/premadonna types. The other artist he hired must be his younger brother, beating him senseless every time he draws something wrong. Every beginning freelance artist should read Francis' post, for the questions he asked. These are questions most beginning freelancers don't even know to ask. Thanks Francis for posting this, a valuable lesson to many... |

The film "owns" him? Ouch. I get that a lot-be one of the team, work your ass off, it's for the good of the film.
Someone elses film, mind you, and if it goes anywhere, you won't go with it. But on the bright(dark) side, one in a million goes somewhere.
It is similar to asking someone" would you devote your time(money) to my film?" Why not just be honest and say, "how about giving me ten grand to go hire a real illustrator?"
Other lines from this phylum of beast-
"That's not what I meant when I said you could do anything you wanted..."
"It needs to beee.... um,m.. better!"
"I was going to do the illustration, but I have much more important things to do, so I'm stuck with you"
(or worse, they come up with the dumbest ideas to make it "better." Sometime I like hearing the previous line, then it's up to you)
They probably read a piece on Jim Cameron that outlines what a beast he is and decide to emulate him, once again, for the good of the film.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It seems like he was not even Answering the Questions your asked, all I read is "I" "MONEY" "ME" "MY" "MY MONEY" This guy has no clue what he wants and how to go about it. I had to deal with ppl like them befor.
BTW: you picked a good choice.
