hey hey everyone,
remeber the other day when i posted a progress pic of my sunset, asking for help with drawing sand dunes and the pyramid? Well, someone REALLy ood did give me some help, and he churned it out in only a few mins. heh, i looked at it and was like 'whaaa! a few mins!! wtf?' and for the last 3 days ive been saying to myself "oh its cuz he's one of those master painters...till my roomate pointed out "it only took a few mins he didnt apporach it as a deatiled work, he through some ideas down and made quick strokes with the brush not worrying about detail PaK, when are u gunna understand that yer going about this all the wrong way!!"
So i took a step back and tried to think simple, I looked at it and i grabbed the paint brush and drew some dark mounds, and then dabbed the light colored sand brush to make the highlight side of the dunes. The deatils arent imprtant, what IS important is that i stopped thinking about the details and tried to get the basic 'dune' shapes down..NOW i know what my instructors have been telling me for the last 2 years "dont even think about the details till all the basics are down."
i thot i'd share my discovery...anyone wanna elaborate? What do u all think?
Lates...
PaK

umm i'm a bit confused by what you're saying there. are you saying there's no need to worry about detail until the basic shape and form of what you are painting are down? i guess you are.
i definately agree, and i've come to this realisation myself over the last few days (mainly from watching some of the talented folk on chat and paint)..
too much detail can ruin an image. i don't know which pic below is yours (both, maybe?), maybe i'd best go check the other thread.
looking good anyway!

My friend you have discovered Impressionlism Basically when you paint this way you merely paint the impression of what your're painting. Worring mostly about form and color. If you life this kinda of stuff you look at N.c Wyeth (early 20th century illustrator), and John Singer Sargent (aka God). Laters.

Pak,
AMAZING improvement you've made. I personally agree with you 100% since i do it myself. I shape stuff out then play with it a little. Sometimes I don't even mess with the shape because it produces a kinda cool feeling for me. The scribbles are there for your head to put what you want in the spot. Mr. Garden Tool is a good example of what i mean
Keep it up, dude. Looks good

I assume that Spooge Demon (or possibly Loki?) did bottom part of the picture on the left?

I definatly agree with getting the rough outline first then adding detail. I always seem to get bogged down in detail which just pooches the final picture. |

I agree with your approach Pak...and remember that Mullins is the man at landscapes (as well as anything else) His attention to color and form in actual painting definitely have translated well into the digital medium. Once you understand color and the ability of objects to have inherent color as well as reflected light..then you can go miles..it also helps to approach things simply (like you said.)
One big thing that C.M is great at is working fluidly at such intense resolutions..then reducing them to look ultra-tight. Few can work that way..and few ever will..hence him holding his crown for a looooooong time.
