Go for more RAM. Memory is all you need. Also, you could buy a new motherboard that supports SDRAM or faster, and buy new components like a new processor when you get the money.

Good luck!

computer im using right now is AMD k6-2 450Mhz / 128RAM / 6.4Gb HDD and all that costed me about $500 i won in some contest.. I also have a 17" Sony monitor but i got it for free (mafia friends gave me)

So if i was you, i'd buy AMD k6-II (or III) 500Mhz ($50) / 6.2Gb HDD ($200?) / 128Ram ($rest).. thats about all ya need!

BTW AMD k6-2/III are a better deal than intels in its class because they're twice cheaper and same speed eheheh ALSO you coul dgo with Celeron.. nice speed for less money too.

shizo was on the right track but don't forget about buying a new motherboard for that ram and processor and you'll probably need a new case/powersupply to go along with those... In the end your goin to have a hard time piecing together a descent system on a $400 budget...

I found an easy way to do things was to save just enough for certain parts piece by piece. It takes you a little while longer but sometimes its easier. I did this, and once I got enough parts I put together a system using half of my new parts and half of my old ones...unfortunately with your current system you might not have any useful hardware except maybe the hard drive and your video card.
Also try to find someone or somewhere to scavenge old parts from, it helps out a lot when your piecing systems together.

I don't know what prices are like anywhere else, but around here he could get an all right machine for $400. Take a look at my numbers, and if you are interested there is a local store that you can order the stuff from.

AMD K6-2 450 ------- $55
Motherboard -------- $90
128mb ram ---------- $95
Case --------------- $45
Maxtor 15gig ------- $125

That runs $438.70 with tax

Here's my system specs...

AMD Athlon 700 OC'd to 850
384mb PC133 SDRAM
#9 Revolution IV 32mb AGP
17" Viewsonic
Dual 12mb Voodoo2's
And the hard drive I store my gfx on:
Quantum Atlas IV 36gb U2W SCSI

It's an awesome system -- I've found that the #9 Revolution IV provides the flat out clearest picture of any video card I've ever used. Period.

I got a Athlon 750 with 256 megs, running with a MATROX G400 and A 30 GB HDD.
Bought it for maybe $1500 to $2000
But prices are getting cheaper by the minute.

Don't go upgrading you P75 man, it's like putting water in a shopping cart. Save some meny and buy a new one.

If only used for CG i'd buy a P3 700 cause photoshop uses P3 instructions which makes is faster than Athlon. Athlon is better for gaming. and if you want to work with large images, better run Windows NT; works a lot faster.

im not upgrading.. just using this computer for spare parts... like video card usb port and a monitor for now
and what is the deal with NT and standard windows? i have used linux for a long time, and i know it is sposed to be equivalent to it in speed, but what is the difference in the way in operates with normal win98?

A celeron is the way to go. It beats the tar off of anything else in its price range.

Celeron 466 = $60
ABIT BH6 or BM6 = $100
128mb RAM = $90
Case = $20
Maxtor or IBM HD = $90-120

Even a lame video card like a banshee will be enough to do art with, and if you pop in something like a TNT or higher you're good to go for gaming as well.
