My opinion would be:

Yes

A 'scanned' image is digital, right?... *heh*

digital art isnt just limited to 3d. as youll notice, lots of the stuff hear is 2d.

personaly i dont see digital art being differnt than traditional. its just a differnt medium, like oil paint, pencil crayon or charchole(sp?)

exactly guy .. it IS a different medium ...i've heard many traditional artists (oil/gouache/acrylic/charcoal/graphite/conte/etc...) bitch about how digital art is "cheating" or is not as hard ... they just haven't touched a computer and are one of the people that are afraid of them because they're assuming they're going to break it or something

... beekay.

Actually, beeKay, painting in the real world is much harder, that's my opinion anyway. As with writing, -you can't erase that easy. The physical way you move your brush, the way you mix colors, it's all very, very different. Some programs simulate real painting, i.e. Metacreation's Painter, but that just feels odd, really.
But, anyways, digital art is just art on a computerscreen, stored digitally in bits and bytes. The way it's produced, doesn't matter, or what?

I saw on the news tonight about some guy who makes huge murals and portraits and stuff out of trash and junk he finds in dumpsters. It may not involve any color blending or stuff like that, but it's still considered art. And all he did was stick trash to a board. So if THAT's considered art, then digital is just as valid, if not MORE valid. It's much tougher, I'm sure.

I think anything can be difficult or easy - it just depends on the effort involved... As a result, I find it difficult to compare forms of art. A girl who spends 2 hours on her make-up... as opposed to a CG Artist spending the same amount of time on a matte painting... or a guy who composes with trash instead of paint or pixels... all valid - and who knows what was easier to do and how long each artist spent developing their skills and practicing. Who can say whether learning to paint on a computer requires more skills than making trash sculptures? Maybe the guy thought his life was 'trash,' chose that as his tool and went through a lot of experimentation to best express his vision? Who knows...

To me, artwork starts within an artist's imagination and heart, and survives through the reactions of its audience. Learning to improve and developing skills are a separate issue from the validity of the media used to create it.

IMHO, of course

I know what you're saying Kurisu. All I meant by my post was that since many people think digital art is an invalid art form, maybe that it's cheating, they should take a look around at some of the other more unique art forms (e.g. trash sculptures). Personally, I thought those trash sculptures were pretty cool. Digital art isn't cheating, it's just another medium. And if trash sculptures are art, then why not CG?

Just about anything and everything in life is art. Now, visual art. That could be a piece of lint rearranged in a little pattern on the floor, only to be sucked up by a vacuum cleaner, or a mural the size of the empire state building.

All that I see that has to be "there" in art is the psychological connection and the emotion put into it. Art is just one of numerous ways to channel the emotions, events, and aspects of life. Nothing more, nothing less.

S'all good mi amigo! Glad we's all be on duh same wavelength

At CalArts I saw a lot of the 'trash' stuff. Some of it I didn't understand, but there were some really interesting compositions... I like 'different' things just as much as the 'similar' stuff, ya know? The difference inspires me to think more different, while the similarity inspires me to get better at what I already know.

I just think Art is anything that's visually appealing. Let me put that in another word. Art = Beauty.
Traditional painting=art=trash mural=digital art.
heh heh.
