have to start somewhere, and this is my beginning.
from a quick sketch i did one night, coloured in photoshop with wacom intuos.
i'll sit over here and hopefully take some constructive criticism on board.

It's not a bad start. Work on the lighting though. Looks like you have a source in front of the chest and one behind him, but the figure in a whole doesn't represent both sources... if that makes sense.

i'm not sure of the look you're going for here,. it's half cartoon edging towards reality,. a mixture of styles, if you under stand what i'm saying,. not bad,.
proportions seem fine for a lumberjack. freaking huge, with a little head,.. so i would play with the shading and lighting a little more,.
as chapel pointed out pick a light source and go with it.. if it makes half the image hard to see, so be it as long as the light makes sense ,..

Looks pretty cool so far,
(i agree) lighting needs work.
The chest is HUGE though.. and it needs to be brought down and less broud.
Other then that looks pretty good.

lighting is something i will take time over in future then
i wasn't really heading for any particular style, and i think that that's where the problem lies. my use of coloured lighting in the past has been very scarce, so i need to learn that. proportions ARE ridiculous, check out those shoulders! but as a first time image i'm fairly pleased, and i think i have a good base to work from.
thanks for the input guys, even if you do seem to be going gentle on me hehe

Well.. I'm not a lighting expert, but I've started just using one source.. once I think that I have that down.. I'll move on to two.
