Well, I'll call it finished even if it isn't. I don't really know if it improved at all from the previous version I posted, but at least he's got an ear now - the ear is maybe too small but I thought it'd look better that way.
This should be released on the upcoming "Virtuelt Kaleidoskop" musicdisk by Level-D Records ( http://www.level-d.com ). Check it out, it's got tunes by the demoscene's current top musicians and graphics from people like Made, Feather, Nytrik, Splif, and many others...

Hmm, to be honest, I don't see too much differences, it's not always easy to remember what was rough or wrong, as others than the artist usually just gets an overall impression of an image. I liked it the first time, so I'll say it again....it looks very good
I want to ask you something, though. I guess you paint in Painter. When I did the portrait of my girlfriend, I painted with the paintbrush tool, as I guess you do as well. But, I was just curious of what kind of brushes you use, since you get such smooth transitions between colors and mine became very "gouache" with hard trasnitions.
Just want to try out some different things

Saffron, It looks great!! The ear has been
completed(the only thing i could point out on your last post of the picture).
Could you maybe post a in progress of that
pic? I'm interrested to see how you start
with a painting like this!
I like your style.

Wow, that looks AWESOME. The ear is much better, and those orange spikes don't look quite as menacing anymore. Great job. |

lovely picture Saf!! This Level-D prod should be great. Quite a few cool artists involved. I contributed an image myself too. Let's hope it doesn't get delayed anymore.
Painter seems to be very cool for creating "free flowing" type images, like this one. No matter how hard you try, it's near impossible to produce the same kind of results in PS. But I still prefer PS atm because of its cool layers, etc. Like Joachim, I guess you use the paint-brush tool and perhaps smoothen eveything by "adding a little water" here and there...perhaps Just Add Watter? Am I right? I'd really like the answer too this one too!

Thanks again!
I agree with Adamantine that it's a problem that the ear now attracts attention so strongly in the piece. I guess it's just a fundamental problem with this composition that I didn't notice before I had actually done the ear. Lesson: I shouldn't have marked the ear so vaguely in the first place...
Joachim, for the smooth parts (face) I painted first with a medium-opacity brush and then finished with the airbrush. I'm used to airbrushing in Painter (for a long time I did all my images with only the airbrush from start to finish), but if you don't like its feel then you can probably get good results with the smear tools as well, like alive suggested. (Of the smear tools I like Smeary Flat in the brushes palette because it both smears and paints depending on pen pressure)
alive, I can't wait to see your image for the disk btw (and everyone else's too of course...)
micke, I'll post a couple of in-between steps later today when I have more time... but you'll be disappointed, they're seriously ugly

Saffron, That is one really nice piece. I've really liked all of you work sofar. Keep up with the awesome work.
looking forward to see those in-progress-pics
,Boomer
btw. I'm sure it's not because of the composition that the ear draws to much attention. It's all in the lightning. I think that its actually more the highlight near the ear to the right that first draws the attention and then afterwards the detail in the ear. So you might get around this problem by moving the highlight more to the right and maybe tone the detail a little down in the ear itself. moving the hightlight to the right will also bring more attention to the baby's face, which I guess was what you wanted in the first place. Still I love it! its really a great moody pic.
