Just out of curiosity.. when you guys paint do you go from dark to light or light to dark? On canvas or paper I usually go light to dark, but I've noticed in some pics posted that it looks like light colors are done last to get that nice glow look.

I approach it from middle values, using the colour/value of the canvas to go either to dark or light. This way one has more control over the balance of the image.

I often pick two clours, a semi-light and a semi-dark one and paint with both from the beginning, sculpting the shapes of what I'm painting, and then start adding detail. So I do both.

I usually work from the middle values too...
But sometimes I like to work from a black silhouette and just fill in the light.
Look at the highrez preview I posted a few days ago...

Are you guys using the paintbrush tool with a low opacity to highlight and darken or are you using the airbrush tool? |

I used to be a dark-and-build-up guy. (still do from time to time)
but then I saw the light!
Or midtones, as it were. (ie. what Danny said) |

i almost always start from 60-70% grey background, and start forming stuff out of it.. first make faint lighter areas, then highlights, then the darker-than-original-base-60-70%-grey areas.
but since i don't use the pen or the airbrush tools at all, it's a different thing. burn/dodge tool is the shit. i've totally in love with it. it suits my drawing style almost perfectly.

I just start with a mediocre color and add darker tones to the shadow areas and lighter tones to the lighter areas. I have this really bad habit of working with a 8-15% brush, so it usually takes a while ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

lately i've been starting a page with about 25% darkness (0 being black and 100 being white) and then adding lights in mainly and then some darks.
it actually depends on the piece though now that i think about it...it varies. But i prefer adding light to dark overall

Depends on what I'm drawing, and what style I'm using.
I sometimes start with a black background, add white and smudge, then add color over it. Other times I'll sketch something out quickly and shape things out, and add layers of color over it to get shading. Or, I just throw color down till I get something.

Cool.. I've been strugglin with my painting, but I've been doing the light to dark method. I think I'll try using midtones first. I'll post the pic when I'm done. ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

You know, I just realized I'd never really even thought about it before I read this thread...

I use to color with water markers, so I always went from light to dark. But I've had trouble with that when painting with photoshop. Could just be me and my unfamiliarity with the brushes. Here is a pic I did with marker and yes I recreated a Rob Liefield pic.
