I just finished my Pier sketch and thought it could be fun to post it in the finished section. Called it a day on the piece yesterday.
This was a good and interesting process, I started with that 3d base and continued on with the idea. As I was saying on my blog the things I did add were the things that should be there, I do know that some stuff in the piece is still a bit rough, mostly looking for that balance currently.
Feel free to comment, let me know what you think works and what doesn't work for you in this piece.
Posted a work in progress on the blog, might aswell add it here too.
Pier.
The vehicle is a loading vehicle, one of those moving slow kind of vehicle. The idea with the city, it is a city in the clouds.
Didn't want to overdo the cloud but now I am starting to excuse myself here Lmao.

Work in progress, from start to finish.

I think that's the most finished I've seen a picture of yours.
Very cool too. Love the wheel rims.
Something I'd say is that the back wheels are confusing. I see from the render that they're close together, which is an interesting idea, but to make an unintuitive idea like that (back wheels that are closer together than the front) it needs to be quite clear what is going on. At the moment it gives the sensation that the perspective isn't quite right. If you're keen to retain that design idea you might need to include something in the form of the body that makes it clear that the front end is wider than the back.
Just something that stood out.
My eyes also wonder why the wheel rims have bright highlights, but the top of the vehicle is quite matte. Different materials perhaps, but something I noticed too. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

That looks really badass.I like the details of the car and the way you handled the material. Also the overall mood feels great - kinda neutral, but still good:)Shiny rims pull the attention to the car, so if you are selling the car, then i wouldn't change them. And what Sumaleth pointed out about the wideness of the car - i belive by tweaking the drop shadow near the rear wheels you could fix the problem. All in all i like it!![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=220302 |

the wheelbase was what hit me too-also that it looks such a badass fast offroad vehicle for a dockloader! design is getting fast looking even for toasters isn't it ?
really love it though, and its nice to see some development beyond what you've been doing with your sketches. This one comes off as very classy and pro to me, lots of variety and with your 3d skillz perspective is there-which is really the biggest invisible yet super visible thing about environmental stuff. |

i love this piece totally.
one very small crit: I'd love see some slight clouds moving at right part of image so it gives sense that it is city in the clouds. it means you create depth vertically (from above to below). Try a bit to separate foreground and background a bit more (city resp earth below)
Left side of part that shows clouds is so good! Maybe making very sligt almost transparent clouds at right is very difficult to do and it may take lots of trial error, who knows.
Overall, awesome image
I wonder about your technique/approach creating correct perspective. There is many ways to do, take from 3d, use photoshop 3d surface, or simply making lines from head after sketching.
Keep up doing good stuffs _________________ out |

Real interesting to hear your views about the piece guys, I really appreciate the comments here. Thank you.
Not gonna single you out, I hope that is ok. All in all I agree with all that you have said. Problem areas was the wheels and with them not getting to much attention too, more detail the more you look at them; so- it is a give and take situation for sure. The vehicle was supposed to be non-wide slowing thing but yea it do looks like race car thingy, maan I gotta keep thinking about the concept when it comes to all items in the scene. The wheels themselves are out of place now that I think about it, looks like dirt track wheels.
City in cloud theme came to me later in the progress and more clouds were added, At first them clouds were supposed to be Matte, background.
City resp earth, yea it is true, should have made that connection more distinct.
The wheels rims are true, I think I overdid that lol. I keep telling myself they are shiny lmao.
I think it is interesting that you guys think the overall feeling still works though, perhaps there is a future for a mix of finished and rough in finished works?
I'm gonna keep experimenting with this when I get the time, more finish though is really time consuming.
This piece was posted over at Cgsociety too, it was accepted just earlier today.
Tomasis, free hand perspective is the best method, that's what I think anyway. That' why I only had the car in the rough 3d mesh, Then I could sketch a more distorted perspective. In only 3d modeling that's a problem, the items in the scene tend to distort too, when you sketch you can make those two elements separate; for eg: a wide perspective and less affected main object in the scene.
The vehicle looks a little bit too distorted though because of that, and that I made the vehicle itself less wide too. |
