Well most of my job is music related so I would have to say, first of all, You have to ask them for more specific info. Otherwise you'll find yourself doing the same cover 50 times cause it's 'not quite what they wanted"
It's easier to find out as much as you can before starting.

1st off all You need a TEMPLATE of the CD COVER (the areas that will be on the cd)

Then If they did not give you anything to work off, then Just make a Snappy MISTIK logo.,
if it was up to me Ill Have Mist in the background of the logo. because cuase mistik sounds like Mistic (unknown, not sure of)
And maybe have the Letter MISTIK look like Glass and have it go Half way around the Cd (180' of the cd is LOGO text, and outher 180' is whatever is on the cd.)

If you need to buy CD Stricker go up to BestBuy, Wal-Mart, Office-Max and put some for 20$(usa) or so...
You can download there software if it done come with it, then You start your painting.,
Print it out and slap it on the cd

i do music. and usually make something for a logo of some sort. but if all else fails, blotch some colors down and use every photoshop filter you have and make something very abstract. that always works =)

I did a cover for an Ohio punk band called Bucketmouth. I asked them exactly what they wanted, and if there was any little detail I was unsure about, I asked them. I got all the info about it before making it, so I knew exactly what they wanted. Here it is, by the way...

i've done a couple cd covers and a tape cover. i just measured the size of the insert off of one of my own cds, and drew and extra 1/4" around the outside for bleed.

the first image is the front cover. the second is the back cover for the same cd:

hennifer: What was the name of the band, did it get published?

If you have the time could you email your reply to me? [email protected]

I did one for Ice Cube. I called him Ice Berg by mistake once. I still breathe.

Am maybe doing one for a guy named Mad Lion? Never heard of him.

Hi!
Try to get the lyrics from them and maybe you can find some ideas there. It's also good to know what kind of music they play, and how their previous covers have looked (it it's not their first album).

You can see some of my work here http://www.progart.com

ustorfixx - it's for a record label called "fun with dirt." this is their 2nd compilation cd, called Fun With Dirt 2 (thats why there's the dirt theme on the cover )

the cd's not out yet. it should be out sometime early summer.

i also did the artwork for Fun With Dirt 1, but its not so good, so i'm not going to post it.

Ustor: It IS out already, but I doubt you heard it on the radio... It's a self-released CD and probably isn't getting much publicity... Plus it's a punk band, so you probably wouldn't have heard it anyway.

By the way, Hennifer, that cover is AWESOME.

Mad Lion is a raggae guy. He hasn't been around for awhile, and I am surprised he is back. He is from New York ( i think ) and rolls with BDP (Boogie Down Productions). He had a popular song back in the day called.....errr.....i forget..it was good though.

i've created a few logos/cd designs for bands <used to co-own a small recording studio> never kept the art, it was on my old hard drive that crashed,. plus i didn't really like the music <had to use a lot of reverb, distortion, plus other sounds to make some of them sound good> anywho.

i made sure i knew what the name of the band is/was what they wanted as the title of the cd, how big they wanted the insert<1 page, a book, a fold out> then i got a color scheme they were looking for,. i gave them 8 designs like they wanted and went crazy on two others,.<most small bands can't afford much, so i give them as much as i can for the amount of money they can provide,. gotta make a livin, eh'.. this technique usually worked...

If you're looking for any more examples, etc, to study, i would suggest http://www.bauda.com

This is the guy who did the Marilyn Manson cd covers, as well as many others. Great stuff in my opinion.

Hennifer: Hehe, I had a feeling that cover looked like it belonged to a punk compilation... I checked out the Fun With Dirt site, and sure enough... it's a punk label. Heh.
