Just wondering if anyone with experience in digital painting and Photoshop, has tried CS 5 and what your thoughts would be about it? CS 4 was way too slow for me, menues updating slowly etc.. still sticking to CS 3.. I'm curious about the new brush blending and stuff like that.. Was the OpenGL improved from 4.0?
Thanks _________________ homepage:blog |

Hmm I never really had any issues with the speed in CS4 it might be a compatibility issue with the graphics card or drivers. As for the new blending system my personal opinion is it feels more like smudge 2.0. I was talking with a colleague about it today actually its not like you can really change the brushes themselves I wanted to slowly add it to my existing brush set which you cant really do. I'm still split about it, i would give the trial a go though
If it was my money i would keep the CS3 licence and get a painter one for experimentation its tool set does everything CS5s new tools has and is a lot more advanced imo.
Really like your artwork btw! _________________ www.tenglandsketchbook.blogspot.com

I personally havent tried CS5 and wont pay the extortionate upgrade price, instead I bought a package called SAI Painting: http://sai.detstwo.com/sai/
It has all the features that Painter, Photoshop and Sketchbook Pro have [mixer brushes, canvas rotation etc) all rolled into the one wihtout any of the drain on my cpu. The ink layers will be a dream for any digital comic artist and the whole package is around $40 i think?
Worth the free trial |

I have purchased the whole cs5 package. The PS seems to be much quicker at larger brushes. Still all the procedural brushes like camel hair brush and others are extremely slow to me. I also didn't notice any significant changes in brush blending. I have the 64bit version. The whole OpenGL stuff does not work under my XP64. Not that it wouldn't work, but it's just officially switched off under XP64. So the canvas rotation is also unavailable to me since it's realized through OpenGL. Actually a very disappointing version of PS.
So I'm still sitting on the CS2 version for digital painting. Sure the PS CS5 is not worth of investing 200-300 Euro for update if you purchase it separately. _________________ digitalben.com |

Oh really! I tried a trial of cs5 on windows7 64bit and the rotation didnt work either, it confused me at the time. Its rediculous it wont function on a 64 bit OS in this day and age. Also they should integrate this new stuff into the existing brush engine, switching to a different tool is counter intuitive. Photoshop has been adding silly "features" for a while now. First with the entirely uncessesay, cluttered and closed UI change, then useless 3D painting and now a cobbled together brush system detatched from the existing engine.
Also what the hell is that colour wheel all about? Does anyone actually use that? _________________ www.tenglandsketchbook.blogspot.com

thanks for the info, good to know!
about the OpenGL, you sure it isn't something you need to switch on inside PS? I know it was switched off first time I tried the demo of CS4, and I changed that in preferences somewhere. This was on XP 32-bit though. _________________ homepage:blog |
