Hey all, recently I was involved in the left 4 dead contest at moddb.com. it was a great contest with some awesome work. The rules were to create either a zombie or a survivor, or both... both of which would fit neatly into valves left 4 dead universe (basically two weeks after a zombie apocalypse breaks out) unfortunately for me, I didn't win, nor did I get runner up..... here is the link to the winners: http://www.moddb.com/events/left-4-dead-concept-art-contest/news/l4d-concept-art-contest-winners
the winners did a good job, and I am happy for them, but naturally I am bummed to not have placed, nor to even know how I ranked in the competition. oh well, next time right?!
and here are my submissions:
lemme know what you think.
good times. see you all in game!!! |

You got robbed.
There wasnt anything great about the first place guy. Seems like they did the top 3 in reverse order. |

I like your concepts, add in a little more background and they would be right on par with the winners.
Overall, I like the first 3, but they are in no means "the best" concepts. I believe nr 1 just stands out because of the dramatic "zombie killing priest" idea, and the smooth lighting. Aside from that, it's a regular concept. |

Your concepts were way more interesting and better executed. Just stating the obvious. |

haha, zombie cat is RAD... I have to show that around here at work.
thanks for the awesome comments guys.
Freebooter: thanks man, you know how much I love your stuff, so I'm thrilled to hear such a comment from you!!!
VinceDN: yeah you're prolly right. Since it was a concept art contest, and they wanted our guys to fit in the L4D world, I tried to push that by making them look like valves concept art... which were done on white backgrounds. ah well.
Tzan: thanks a lot. yeah I thought for sure that the two runners up should have beat the grand prize winner. I dunno... the whole priest thing seemed cliche and if you've played the game, you know that the characters yell stuff out at times... a priest is the last one I want to hear yelling stuff out throughout my game.... "bless you my son.... the power of christ compels you.... you are SAVED!!!!" yuck. |

These are fantastic pieces and I definitely think that the Lobber at least should have placed.
I can understand why the Priest was chosen as the winner - because it is cliche and ties into the concept of the game (Zombie movie cliches) really well. Zombie and Vampire movies always seem to have that gun-slinging priest with a dark past.
From an artistic point of view though, I think your 'Eli' was executed much better though. _________________ http://neechart.blogspot.com/ |

The runner-ups didn't have anything on your stuff and it seems the priest just won because it's oh so cool. Shiny anime glasses and clich etc.
Maybe they just skipped over your stuff because your entries would've taken winner and runner-up.
Eli is is really an amusing and nice concept. I can already imagine his personality off that image really well. |

Very good insights Tj Wright and gLitterbug. Thanks for your kind words.
I'm currently in the process of making a whole series of these guys for the l4dead universe. Hopefully I can model them up and zbrush em too. we'll see. quite an endeavor especially when the game I'm working on is in crunch time....
not much time for anything these days..... at least work is fun!!! |

Ah it was a fun contest I really enjoyed your Eli concept Entered quite late with my entry;however, I'm glad my buddy made it as a runner-up (Spex94).
Aye, I would of liked to know the judges thoughts for each piece, and what they liked and disliked about them.
Here is my submission.
