this board has me hoooked. i love all these drawings everyone is posting. only problem is, after the post has passed by, the image is 'gone'. sure i could save it on my hard drive and enjoy it myself, but where is the sharing?
.. anyways, to make the story short. ..
what do you guys think about making a 'digital art Archive'. this would be a website that has a gallery of all the fine (and finished) images that are posted here. kida like gameart, except it would just be graphics posted on this forum.
i think i could make a somewhat simple site that would contain this stuff, probably on a free server, but hey, it's there.
soo, what do you think? would you feel ripped off 'cause your art is on some other website? ( i know a lot of you have your own galleries). of course permission would be needed, form the artist to put that art there, and info like artist name, his/her website, original picture size, etc. would be directly below the image...
i thought organization wise, the page would be split into months.. and thumbnails of the pics for that month.. click on thumbnail.. etc.

that's a really good idea. this could help many artist show their art to the world (wide web... hehe). what would be cool is if everyone on this forum could have this own little section (like organizing the artwork by he actual artist), sorta like that elfwood site, except only for members of this forum.

I like the idea, but who'd tackle the workload of maintaining the site, and all the server demands? Considering the quality of the art on here, I think the main issue would be that free webspace wouldn't be able to handle the load within a short amount of time. Elfwood uses more than one entire hard drive for their galleries.

Yeah, I've always thought this would be a good idea.
I like the gameart format, but a nice general subject would be good.
Someone would have to spring for a server in the end, I think, 'cause it would require a large amount of space eventually. A good database would be essential; nicely crosslinked so you can see pic by artist name, by date, by title, by subject word search etc etc

Anyways, there doesn't seem to be anywhere that does this kind of thing. There's scene archives, there game based art sites; it would be good to have some kind of "everything" site too.

Well, not necessarily Xcal, you dont have to upload images to that server. All you (whoever runs the site) have to do is use links, so all that needs stored on that server is possible thumbnails. The images themselves will remain on the artists own website. The only exception would be the artist without a website who would then need to upload.

I guess that would work.. :/

Um... I think a lot of people wouldn't be too thrilled about images being directly linked to off their sites... Extra bandwidth usage etc.

If there is enough demand, I would be willing to start up a hosting service of some sort exclusively for the digital art community. I'm willing to register a domain for the site (once again, providing that there is enough demand) and allowing each artist to have his/her own site hosted.

I believe that by creating a community, the individual artists would recieve much more exposure than they would on their own at one of the large free sites. Perhaps even when one of the hosted sites makes an update with a new image, the main site would post a notice of it on a news page...

Anyway, if you guys want it, I am willing to provide you with a professional solution, tailored to fit your needs.

I've recently started my own webdesign service so I'm already paying for webservers and domain names. Just let me know what ya want and I'll personally work with ya to provide it.

If this comes to fruition, I will be more than happy to host some images. I got more than enough web-space....Just not the time to help maintain a site.

Cheers,

cool.

would the site be a:
"1 admin taking submissions from this site only and letting everyone(public to) view it?"

or a:
"everyone on this board has a pass and all to upload and update this site within good taste and letting everyone see it"

hmm...needs a name with a cool logo...maybe the good hi-res artist on this board could colabborate on that? maybe?
oh yeah, needs background music =) hehe

Well... I was thinking more along the lines of having anyone that is interested help with the maintenance/updates of the site. Also I think I could probably provide about 10 mb of space for hosting to each user for their hosted sites, maybe more space later on seeing as the graphics will fill things up rather quickly.

Anyway.. I'm counting on working with you all to do this. (translated, you guys will hafta help me out to get this thing goin cause most of my spare time is already filled up...)

Well, I check this board every day. I've got unlimited webspace on my account for this ISP, and despite the unattractice address, which one could fix with an easy cjb adress, I'll start one up. Nothing better to do .. just need to think of a format and stuff. But I'm game. Simple HTML loading so you can get to the graphics. I'll go nab a cjb account.

hey guys, this seems like it's leading to something. here are some suggestions which i think would be good. first of all, as i mentioned before, you could organize the art by the artist, instead of just having one huge archive. another this is, making the separate artist sections personalized by the artist themselves, or let them be able to edit their own section, so that they may put their own info, logos, resumes, contact info, or whatever in it. maybe the artist could have his/her own username and password, which would be needed in order to edit the site. i dunno, it just seems more fun when things are personalized by the artist themselves, cuz u sorta learn more about the artist's personality, etc... and for my last suggestion, maybe a small archive of tutorials could be put up, which were made by the artists themselves. hope this gets somewhere

Oh well.. since I'm a coder I think I could help everybody by making everything automatic. I mean.. I can make some ASP or PHP3 pages to administer the whole thing and keep evrything simple for everybody to maintain the site. What do you think ?

That was kinda what I was thinking of Dakkan, you seemed to have expressed it a little better though. I think that there are certainly enough talented people on this site to get things running smoothly. And with tanis's help we can some of it automated.

Well, i can't code or anything, but i'd love to help out with graphics and organizing this whole idea. i suggest that everyone who's willing to help out in any way in making this idea happen, exchange icq numbers (i'm assuming most of u guys have icq... if u don't, u could just download it). My icq number is 15790343. so if u want to contact me, feel free (just mention that u'r from this forum, and mention this archive idea). and anyone who would want to help out, just post u'r icq number up, and maybe we can start actually organizing this.
peace out....
Dakkan

I'm in. This is my kinda thing anyway. I would have no problem in helping with the organizing and day to day stuff if it were to turn into a big thing. My ICQ is 14617720. I have the time, I'm online all the time......

i whipped up a quick site to show you what i was thinking of. the colors/navigation/ design can be improved, i was just making the bones of the page.
i see 3 big hassles in doing this whole thing:
1. getting the site finished and polished etc.
2. maintaing it.. can't be THAT bad, what would you say the average new images per week that are posted here?
3. asking people for permission to put the images on the site. (this is the biggest hassle i think)

hmm.. it seems that this is leading to something. I work for a local ISP and I think I can try and ask is I can setup a server for this project. This way we could do almost anything we want to. I'll keep you all posted ASAP.

Well it seems four of us from the forum have got together last night and started to hash some things out. We have some web space and we got people to help out. We are planning on starting small and gauging the response from the community. Initially we are going to start an archive where artists can submit their art to us and we will post it in an archive that is organized by artists' names. If the response is good and if we can get advertising we will then go on to expand the site to incorporate a more complex archive system and even web hosting. So for now were gonna need artists to start submitting artwork that they would like to have in this archive. Send them to [email protected] and we will see how well this idea can get off the ground.
Thanks

if the above posting fails to work out, hope not, there's also an option on starting a club @ clubs.yahoo.com, clubs.excite.com or www.interclubs.com Everyone can post, there are a few administrators who can keep things organised. I don't know if this is the solution but it is an option...

Dude, we're artist's here. We are never satisfied unless we made it ourselves. We'll probly run ourselves raged trying to do this...but if we can we will.
On another note, I am thinking of making a new topic focusing on getting this organized so if any of you are interested look out for it.
