Hi,
This is my first post here. First off love the amazing styles going on here. You are all really inspiring. I'm a real newbie to drawing, painting etc. Actually when I was a kid I liked making letterforms especially but then teachers, parents etc said I was pretty crap and I gave it up and got into drumming instead. Anyway, years later working with some graphic designers I started to teach myself Photoshop and graphics/typography and do some stuff with photomanipulation, compositing etc.
However, I'd really like to start drawing (traditional) and then eventually end up doing some digital art. I like the work of people like Kumiko, Imperial Boy etc (characters, cityscapes etc ) but also hip-hop style stuff. I bought some books on perspective and figure drawing (Loomis) and I've started by drawing heads and started beginning with the perspective books at the same time!! First I did one pic from photoreference (front view) and then I've been applying the techniques I learned to my own front view faces made up from ideas in my head. (I'll post up in WIP when I can for some feedback)
Just wondering whether you think this is a good place to start. How did you start out?
Also do you think it's a good idea once you have some fundamentals down to go to college because that maybe a possibility too although I have a bad experience of learning at school really and much better at learning on my own.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Hope to be participating in here more in future |

Make sure you don't associate "This is crap" with "You should give up". The fact is, since you're just starting to take drawing seriously of course your work will be crap. The key is to figure out what about it is crap, and how you can improve.

If your goal is art similar to what you see on this website, you need to spend the majority of your time drawing from life and other kinds of reference. You need to study art theory and terminology. Using the ideas you learn, you can more easily identify problem areas in your work. Doing one picture from photo reference is not going to be enough. You need to do many, many studies to understand the skeleton and muscles structure of a human body. If you don't understand how all of that works together, then you will not be able to bring your ideas to life.

That's a personal decision that requires a great deal of thought and personal understanding. We can answer questions about college, but you'll have to be much more specific. For a start, tell us what role you want art to play in your life. Do you do it for fun? Do you want to do it as a job? What kind of job? |

I'm from asia and I started drawing some animes, my friends saw how good it was. So from there, I kinda like drawing things I like. Sometimes I sit on our school bench and drawing things that I saw making sketches and all that. When I had my first computer that way way back... I installed photoshop and really had a hard time drawing there. But with hardwork and enough dedication I was able to manage through. You see, its not the people around you that gives you hope to draw. Even if you do not have the talent as long as you are dedicated, then you can draw anything.
