Hmm so I started working on something a bit more detailed (2 different pieces)

One of them is an original character while the other one is a fanart of Davy Jones(the design might have some errors but I'm fine with that Wink )

Here's the original character:

face:

body:

and the Davy Jones one:

'basic' layout:

after some detailing and tweaking

Decided that I need some hard critique to make them better so I came to you guys Wink

I'd like to keep the design of the original character somewhat the same, but I feel like the colours need something to spice it up, I just dont get in to my head what this could be Sad The hands seem different length's right now, and it needs some correction.

Other than that, all the things you see as errors, I'd love if you could point them out with hard critique Smile I'll try to work on the areas and hpefuly in the end it wont look like crap Surprised

Cheers!

I'm not really in any position to give you any crit but i will say that the character of yours looks pretty flat in the head and torso areas, i just dont feel any, structure i guess.

Just my thoughts

u gotta stop painting 1000 billion small lines. it looks like ur paintings are made of hair. first of all u should make a sketch. it shouldnt take more than 1-5 Minutes. and in the sketch if thers a black area....u just draw a black area! and not 1000000 single lines with black color. just 1 or few. so u could still count them easily. and vary the size of ur brush much more. big simple areas = big simple brush. if u dont simplify first then later there is nothing u can "detail" Wink

actually I do start off with a sketch->silhouettes->simple lighting to make the shapes show, mainly with the Simple Water(or something like that :p) option from digital watercolors.

I do know my technique needs alot of tweaking, I'm just a total novice when it comes to texturing, and thats apparently what you're seeing.

oh and the reasong there are alot of 1~ pixel strands is the fact that the brush I used kinda of made that happen. My pieces are usually quite plain and simple, and I would like to spice them up somehow.

So basically what you just said I have done, I just plain suck at texturing :p

I was supposed to try my hand at using something to blend the lines in but when I did that, the picture lost some of its depth. Back to practicing I guess Smile

The reason why I actually started doing Davy Jones is the fact that there arn't too many plain/simple spots on him Smile I'll go try my hand at some making him a bit smoother right now.

[edit]

I guess its a bit smoother now, not quite sure if I like it more or less now

this one is better

u could try to use a rough looking brush for rough areas and a smooth one for smooth areas Wink
