is there a way to attach an alpha channel to the background layer, ie. make the background layer have transparency?
i've always had this question in my mind, and i've asked quite a couple of my friends about it but it seems no one knows if it's even possible. i use another photoshop-like program called gimp and with it you can attach an alpha channel to the background by simply right-clicking on the background layer and selecting "add alpha channel" and poof, you now have transparency on the bg chan.
what i do now is that i recorded an action to make a copy of the background layer then delete the background layer, but i wonder if there's a preset way to do it |

Photoshop treats the layer called 'background' differently to any other layer, so all you need to do is double-clink on the name and call it something else. You can then add an alpha channel.
