Wacom sells a new Cintiq since this month, the Cintiq 12WX.

Now i wonder if anyone here already has this one?
And i wonder, how to work with that extra monitor, because it has a aspect ratio of 8:10 instead of 3:4 and my others screens have a higher resolution.

So i cant split the Signal, but i even wont give away one of my Dual Monitors Confused
Any ideas... ?

The resolution's not *too* limiting, although it would probably seem like a big step down from 1400x1050 on my 12" tablet PC.

Actually, I guess you could keep all your Painter/PS interface elements on another monitor, and just use the Cintiq for the painting itself. That wouldn't be so bad.

Any word on price? I like that, unlike the big Cintiqs, this one seems able to be used in your lap.

The problem with those "cheaper" pen displays is that they don't have a good rotating support

Just wanted to point out, in case someone hasn't yet noticed, from Wacom's website you can buy refurbished pads for a decent discount. Some Cintiqs there as well last time I checked. Buying used directly from a private person is probably cheaper, but you might not find what you need and through Wacom you get a properly checked and tested product.

Hmm that aspect ratio on portrait mode set on Properties could be interesting for character concepts. Though I'm not sure if being interesting is enough to warrant the 1200+ price tag.

I found this info on Wacom Asia. http://www.wacom-asia.com/cintiq/cintiq12/index.html

What you guys reckon: good product or mere curiosity?

You can buy a pretty decent tablet PC for that much, and not be tethered to your desk.

I would use it for commercial work most of the time so I don't think being tethered to a desk is very big an issue. Tablet PC's seem nice but the ones I'd like are in 2500 buck price range. My computer is okay for but old SyncMaster CRT screen I got from my bro and Intuos 3 A5 are liabilities when working at home.

So I have couple of possible upgrades:

A) Apple Cinema Display 23" + Intuos A4 = 1300
+good screen
+familiar tablet
- I already have an one size smaller Intuos so buying new one feels like a waste of money

B) Cintiq 21UX = 2500-2800
- expensive
- cant be held on lap when painting
- response time seems a bit low to my eye
- cursor floats, maybe fixable with careful calibration

C) New Cintiq 12WX = 1200?
+ seems cool
+ can be held on lap
+ brushes and shit would be on the cintiq screen so I wouldn't need a new big LCD right away, as my CRT is enought when in full screen mode.
- haven't tested it yet

D) Tablet PC = ?
+ It's all in one package, I wouldn't have to buy a new desktop in foreseen future.
- are screens in these decent enough for commercial work?
- pen sensitivity?

Sorry for taking this thread off topic but there is hardly any reason to create new thread for this.

Tablet screens tend not to be quite as nice as regular notebook screens or desktop displays. Most of them are 6-bit dithered instead of true 8-bit.

Mine is fine with contrast, but it tends to undersaturate, so I find that I have to do my final color correction on a "real" monitor.

Pen sensitivity on any recent tablet will be 256 pressure levels, with no tilt. Personally I think that's plenty.

You do have to calibrate the pointer position to compensate for the thickness of the screen covering, and it's still never going to be pixel perfect. You'll find that you need to zoom in for precise drawing.

I love my tablet, but the platform does still have its limitations. I've done many full size, full color illustrations on it, but mostly I use it as a sketchbook.

That said, you could always use a tablet as a workstation, and just plug in an external monitor. You'd want a 4:3 screen, to match the proportions of most tablets. I know my Toshiba will output up to 1920x1200.

I took the leap of faith and ordered that new Cintiq 12WX. For 1229 it's a good thing that we have strict customer protection laws here in Finland. I get back to you when I get it.

When I get back to Finland, I am going to squat at your place, freebooter. Better order a second Cintiq.

Affected> I already had to sell my left kidney just to get the first one. But both of my eyes still have corneas, I could sell one of them for some buck. Who needs both eyes when painting only 2D?

I asked some questions at Wacom forum if anyone is interested

I absolutely LOVE working on a Cintique, got the 21" at work. They kinda spoil concept guys. Razz

Thing is, I don't think I'd EVER buy one for home. IMHO, they are flagrantly overpriced. Consider:

It's basically an LCD on top of an Intuos.

21"LCD= $300-ish
12x19"Intuos= $750-ish
= $1050(ish)

Meanwhile it(21" Version) costs almost THREE TIMES that.

You can not tell me those cost anywhere NEAR 3K to make.

Well, my order takes 2-5 weeks.. damn. Although one Finnish online store said that "as soon as you pay the bill we'll send you the package in two work days". Sounds quite rotten to me as even Wacom Online shop has their own product out of stock at the moment, as do Play and Amazon.

Oh when will we see this elusive god-product?

EDIT: hmm yesterday Wacom Webshop said Available November 26th but now I looked at it again and lo: available from December 10th, 2007!

Could be that my Christmas isn't going to be merry after all Sad

Freebooter: assuming that december 10th date holds, you will get it by christmas without a hitch. I ordered my Intuos from Wacom UK, once they actually shipped it I believe it only took a day or two to arrive.

I ordered mine from verkkokauppa.com. I wanted to be sure that I can return the product if it proves to be shitty.

by "order" you mean mail-order right? Because if you buy the product at the store instead of them shipping it to you, you don't have the right to return it except if it is faulty. That was verkkokauppa policy anyway, not sure what the actual law is.

The way it says in their policy it doesn't matter whether they post it or you pick it up personally, as long as you ordered it from internet. In Finnish:'Meill on 14 pivn palautus- ja vaihto-oikeus postipaketin tai noutotilauksen noutohetkest alkaen'

Apparently it is different thing if you just walk in and buy something readily available straight from the shelf.

neff> that sucks so much! It seems that Cintiq 12WX is really low on stock. I placed orders to two different dealers in 16th November, but last week both replied me that there is a serious shortage and they can only send me the product in January 2008. It seemed like I wouldn't have a white Christmas this year.

But alas! Yesterday I found that one place still had the new Cintiq in stock! I immediately placed my order and paid it, I'll should get it this week, even by Wednesday if I'm lucky.

I'm so happy, oh so happy...lalallalaa

Oh my brain hurts!
The Cintiq was supposed to be here last Friday, but they loaded the package on a wrong damn plane! My shipment has been touring Norway for past four days, and now they finally had the brains to redirect it to Finland. I probably would've been a first person in Finland to own Cintiq 12WX, but of course they just had to Fess it up.

Now, if it gets stuck on a customs I'm going to blow.
