Well hello there.. This is my first post to sijun but i have been lurking on and of for years. It is awe-inspiring seeing the work that is showcased here every day. Now, i may have been lurking here but i have so far had very little experience producing my own pieces. So in this regard Im still a rookie. In fact most of my previous experience with using a brush comes from my youth, when i liked to spend many evenings with my model miniatures.

Now a few days back a friend asked if i could make a picture for his guild's webpage. Name of the guild is Nastrand, from Nordic mythos, so i thought id keep that theme. As i said Im new at painting in digital media and have a limited knowledge Photoshop. I also still don't have a tablet (?) so all is done with a mouse. I started with a pencil sketch that i scanned and coloured in PS. And since my skill was limited with that program i mostly just used the smudge and burn/doge tools...

Anyway, here it is..

Any tips? What did i do wrong? How do i move on from here to do better in the future?

No suggestions for improvement here.
Looks really good. Nice detailing, especially the fingernails!
Good job.

It depends:
do you want a more realistic look to it, or do you like the general look that it has?
If you want a more realistic look, then I suggest to improve the appeareance of metal.
Great job: congrats

Edit: I like your first version better than the second. The hands might be a bit small. Maybe use a mirror, duplicate the pose and work with that. Example below (which didn't quite work; I took the thumb as the starting point and shouldn't have).

you went overdose on the burn tool in the second one...fires so white...but that may just be the web compression...definately obtain a tablet...though this is very impressive for a mouse drawing...practice some more naturalistic shadows..black gets old and muddy far too often....
cheers
