In another thread someone mentioned colouring their grayscale work, which reminded me that's an option. I can't bear to show the colour version of this monstrosity (from '03). The rework (below; WIP but evidence of progress?) seems an improvement. No refs. C&C welcome.
Edit: restored the missing image mentioned below.

Hello
The lighting seems ok.
I would define a little more the contours and features (in the face) of this illustration (eyes, etc)
Then I would paint it using the method (in Photoshop) that alows you, in a diferent layer, to ad colour to the base layer.
It is good so far: keep up.
Best regards

Thanks for your comment. I still haven't checked out the colouring options in ps...
Now I see the second pic here (originally posted under the first one) has stopped loading, for some reason (can't be photobucket, I just started using the account). Maybe just as well, I thought it was a bit stark. This version has more midtones (and is still wip:

The second image is missing /sijun/ in the url.
The image is progressing well. Keep looking back at the reference image. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

Thanks Sumaleth. The broken image link was my fault (I moved it to another folder after posting it here - now restored). I don't like using references - seems like plagarism? - but will have to find one - one of the hazards of not using a ref to start with, apparently. |

There's definately progress in it.
The eyes in the new one look much much much more natural. (I wouldn't find a bad word for them even if I had a dictionary! and I'd prolly need a dictionary to write dictionary correctly too, but don't mind that!)
I'm currently stuggling with eyes myself while doing realism, I'm not as pessimistic about it seeing your progress, thanks!
You (hard)/(not hard) work has not gone to waste! Keep it up ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

Thanks Lakka, you're welcome. I'm glad you're encouraged by those eyes. The rest of the figure is taking longer than I expected (I'm not so good at other things), though I'm still working on it. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

I looks very good.
As I said before a little more definiton will push it to a higher level: keep on. _________________ Visit my Website at

Collected references (thanks Corbis), but applying the 'corrections' changed the character of the figure. I like what it 'says' already so I compromised (made a few changes; below) and will leave it for now (repaint when I've learned a bit more). Thanks again for your comments.

Remember, using a reference doesn't mean that you just copy the original image as closely as possible. You could just use the reference to get a color scheme or an idea of what textures to use.
As for your painting, what's going on under the chin? It looks like either a strange beard, or a shadow that shouldn't be there. |

Thanks Drew, understood. I used four references; at one point the left shoulder (his right) looked great but it competed with the face; and so on. Of course in another thread someone did say 'copy the original image as closely as possible', which I've done at times:

The "strange beard" must be a local thing (appeared about the same time as 'chinstrap' beards). I've seen a few by now - that part is from life. Edit: looks like a variation of "chin curtain" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Beardindex.jpg |
