Balistic's post made me realise I could mention this, I've made a career change and now work in the video game business doing concept art.
I work with David Levy (vyle to you Sijuners) here at Spacetime Studios in Austin,TX.
Thanks, Sijun! |

Yup.
I started in the testing department because its nearly impossible to start in design. But after 3 months a temp 6 month position opened as a Content Creator and I got it. But at the end of that time they were restructuring things to save money and I didnt get to stay.
The testing department isnt as bad as some people think I enjoyed it. I did some perl scripting for a daily automated Build Verification Test and general game testing.
As a content creator I built terrain like the Old Forest and Barrow Downs, placed monster camps, built dungeons Haunted Marsh, Prince of the Barrows. I built the Cardolan wall which stretches west-east across Bree-Land. I did another perl program to change a creature generator script from one format to the new one. We had hundreds of scripts in the old format.
I didnt make 3d models I placed what others had made.
It seems they changed a lot of stuff since 2004, but some of my work is still in game. |

M@, cheers!......super amazing ultra-psyched for you, much,much,much respect.
Tzan, very cool, thats super-interesting, was there any sort of concepting process that you had to follow,or did you work from design docs, or maybe just as you go? |

There were no real design docs.
For terrain work, the world builder guys would sketch out something , show it to the lead and then do it.
For dungeons, placement of stuff on the terrian, it seemed that most people did no prior planning and just winged it.
Being an architectural designer I always sketched out what I was going to do before starting. When I did the Old Forest I had a limited area to work in so I needed to know in advance how much space I had and plan it out. I read the relavent pages from the book about their travels thru the area and I replicated them as best I could. I havent gotten a character high enough level to peek in there and see if they kept it the way I made it.
I was shocked to see a few people who basically had no formal design training just "doin' stuff". A little planning goes a long way. So there was a little of everything happening. Each person had a lot of freedom to succeed or fail. The first time another person or lead would even see the work would be on the next play day.
On the art side there was a concept artist of course. They did the characters, architecture styles. |
