Hi. I'm digitalpete on Deviant and I really want to learn how to do smoky looking backgrounds for fantasy-type digital paintings. I've only done 3 pieces with my new wacom graphire and I need to find out about techniques. I've been drawing and painting for a long time but not for profession. I'm a software developer and business owner.
Can anyone point me to really good tutorials that might help with the background (non-detail) but really beautiful sky, clouds, ocean, type work?

Yeah, thats about the way it goes. You can find some tutorials on the web (for example: http://3dtotal.com/ -> Tutorials), that teaches you some techtiques, and perhaps tells you how things works in this world.
But the fact is that if you want to learn to paint something, then paint what you see. There is no shortcut for this.
..or is there.. |

All the tutorials won't substitute practice: you will learn each time you try. Keep painting. _________________ Visit my Website at

Of course, you can't practice what you DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO.
You don't absorb techniques and tips by osmosis just wishing about it.
You guys would be a heck of a lot more helpful if you could suggest anything more profound than "practice," when someone is asking HOW to go about practicing...
Same for the ubiquitous "look for reference image - Google "clouds."
That is as worthless a suggestion as "go outside and look at the sky, paint it." HOW?
Doing tutorials that explain how to rough in compositions, how to establish basic values, and the proper way to then build up the composition from back to front, large and loose, rough to detailed is MUCH more helpful that the ubiquitous crap a lot of you post as an answer to almost any request for help these boards get, y'know? _________________ Life is short. Any technique needs practice: the tutorial is only the begining and it is the practice that makes you know how to do it.
No one will learn from osmosis, but everyone has the hability to use their brain and improve...now that is a god advice, don't you think?
Go outside, look at the sky, take a deep breath and calm yourself..you will think better and post some good advices on this thread. _________________ Visit my Website at
