Question.... I'm gearing up for a new laptop with 4 gig of memory. Is Photoshop CS2 able to use more than 2 gig of memory with Win-XP?

Another question is that is XP able to handle 4 gig?
If I have understand it right, with win-xp 32 your memory is limited to 4Gb
..but..
It�s more like 4Gb - (your video card memory) = your total ammount of RAM or less. Depending in what position stars are on the sky, and if you have sacrificed enough blood and tears and money to computer gods.  |

no point Phil - 32bit NT will only allow you to allocate 2GB RAM per application..
Photoshop CS2/3 will see more than 2GB with 64bit ie. XP64, Vista64 or OSX..
the way Photoshop will work under the 64bit OS is, 3.5GB can be given to Photoshop, after that remaining free RAM will be used as a live Scratch (before it hits your HDD)
if you want XP32 to see more than 2GB of ram you need to hack the boot.ini to allow it to see all your RAM - but! if you put 4GB in your PC, 512MB will be used by the OS to control your PCI/AGP/PCI-E devices, so you'll be left with 3.5GB, of which 2GB will be seen by Photoshop and the other 1.5GB will be used by XP or other apps open on your system |

Is XP normally 64bit. For example, when ordering a Dell laptop from their website, they have an option for XP on several models... but it is just referred to as XP.
I've heard disturbing things about Vista and Photoshop... Would 4 gigs and Vista64 help whatever that problem is? Sorry for the complete vagueness of my question...

I guess that won't awnser your question however it might be of interest.
I am using XP64 because as bob has already said 32bit doesn't support more than 2 gigs. However before any or several applications use these 4 gigs the CPU is up two 100% already. Only when rendering in 3dsmax or hyper multi tasking I get up to 3.5...sometimes...most of the times explorer crashes before reaching 4 gigs.
oh, and vista will steal one of your 4 gigs anyway even if you switch off all of the useless interface stuff. Go for XP 64. it uses about 300Mb. And you'll definately have a hard time cracking those 4gigs
I had to open painter photoshop after effects 3dsmax winamp while all of these had to handle funny stuff like 25 000 pixel image transformations etc. Took a while to get everyhtign under control again |

nope, it usually comes in 32bit flavour, you'll have to pay the extra for the 64bit version |
