Thanks for the comments you guys!
designboot - Just paint with Photoshop round brushes. Custom brushes can only do so much, as you have to be very careful to not have that "stamped shape" look.
the_insider - They're all pretty much Photoshop. I find that for commercial work, I use a lot less Painter than I do for my personal works. I think it's mainly because Painter's layer system is not very good when you're doing any kind of wet-on-wet brushwork--the transparent pixels are treated as white and that just fucks everything up if you need to keep things neat on layers by themselves. And for commercial work, you absolutely have to provide your clients with very neat and organized layers, otherwise you make things hard for them when they need to work with your files. One characteristic of a experienced professional digital artist is how organized his layers are--all are named, grouped..etc.
It's kind of bittersweet to have people say that they like my tight rendering skill, as it's something I consider a bad habit, and I've been trying to evolve into a more painterly artist. But it seems clients dig that polished look and it's good for getting gigs. Oh what's a boy to do? I'd do more painterly stuff in my free time, but there's no such thing as free time when you're already working full-time AND taking on freelance when you get home. |

Well then.. stop taking on so much extra stuff and spend more time with that beautiful wife of yours. |

That's what I'm thinking too. Unfortunately, she's out of town for a month and a half. Her silky pajamas is all I have now. *sniff*
She hasn't complained though (about the freelancing), as she knows if we're ever to buy a house in the Bay Area, I'd need to work my ass off in addition to the full-time job. Some of the stuff I took because I want to though (not paid work)--stuff like the Black Mesa project. |

yeah I know how it is. Ive been wanting to take on a bit of freelance stuff myself to break up the recent monotony of spreadsheet work at my dayjob... but that would be at the cost of time with my family.. Its a delicate balance to be sure.
BTW we are still planning on coming down your way next year. Still would love to get together hang out for a day and talk art and photography with you and your wife! Im sure Steph would love Elena. |

well, i do prefer your more painterly images.. if that's any comfort (that portrait of your wife for example)
i can imagine that alot of clients wants the 3d rendered look.
For example, all the new childen shows makes me scared,
it's eitcher vector or 3d stuff.(es, i do understand it's quicker)
just imagine a childrens show done in a "speed painted" way, now that would be interesting,
and probably better for kids to watch as it would at least spark their imagination a bit. |

Hard to add anything that's not already been said. They're all strong concepts So I'll just throw in my fanboyism I like how you lit the space mmo concept gal. Subtle and very clever.
