Can you narrow that down a lot? What kind of animation?

Hardware isn't too important if you are just starting out as you will be doing fairly simple stuff i would presume. Cinema 4d is a very nice package and IMHO the easiest to get to grips with of the programs I've used.

I think you still need to be a lot more specific if you want some more detailed advice.

YES.

Honestly, Sijun isn't the best place to learn about animation. Sure, there are animators around, but I think you'll find that most of your newbie animation questions have already been answered (and answered well) at cgtalk. You're asking a very broad question, and frankly, it'd be a lot easier all around if you spent a few weeks reading up about software and hardware.

But, I'll give you the ultra-short version. A decent rig to start with includes:

Animation paper.
A peg bar or two (one for the lightbox, one for the scanner).
Pencil.
A lightbox.
Whatever computer you currently own.
A scanner. Anything that works with your computer.
Compositing software ($:Aftereffects. Free: probably blender.)
3d software. Any will do just fine. If you're broke: Blender. Some cash: Lightwave. Money to burn:Maya, 3dmax, XSI.
2d software. Gimp or Photoshop. You will *need* to know Photoshop at some point. That's the only software out of all this stuff that is absolutely the industry standard.
To learn the tools: RTFM.
To learn techniques: cgtalk.com, use the search. Between the posts and the links there's more than you could read and understand in a year. Or five.
Time.
Patience.
The ability to learn stuff on your own. That's not an insult or anything of the sort. It's just what's needed in this fast paced industry.

Good luck.

If you're working/getting a mac, then I might suggest Shake for compositing. Very powerful, and the mac version costs about 500 these days... It does have some learning curve though, but IMO it beats the crap out of after effects any day.

before i think you consider buying hardware or software, u should experiment with perhaps with Maya.

OH and listen closely to what im about to say. buy the book "Illusion of Life" that is if you want to be an animator. You will thank me, trust me this book is the bible of animation.[/b]
