hey guys, just joined here. love the site and the community so far. a little about me: i'm a college student. studying graphic design, taking a life drawing 1 class right now, and been practicing. i was hoping i could get a little feedback, this is my 3rd attempt at a self portrait with PS (don't know if that is the best program for me at the moment but i need to learn it) i know you guys can't tell me everything that's wrong with what i'm doing right now but if you see something that is obvious i would greatly appreciate it. it's not done yet, pointers on hair too would be nice, i have a buzz cut.

I say it looks like the eyes are too big. And there is this black line around them. Do your eyes have that? Are you sure there isn't more pink colors there? The skintones are a little off as well, but you're getting it. Try to really see what is there rather than going "ha! i know how to draw this!" and putting something down like you would usually do it, because in the end it won't look quite natural.

I'm sorry if i sound harsh but in many cases we all have pre-established icons to represent eye, nose, mouth, hand, ear and so on. And if you don't police yourself you sometimes end up just using one of those pre-learnt representations because they feel more comfortable than actually straining yourself to see what is there, at what angle it is and how large it is in relation to the other things in the image, how dark it is and so on.

This is why some teachers will have you draw stuff upside down or looking only at the negative spaces around an object (if you were drawing an island the negative space would be the water, it's the non-object areas of the image).
