Hey, it's been ages since I posted anything myself. Guess this isn't what you'd usually expect here, but it should qualify as art too, since I painted stuff on it.

First a wooden box I made for my best online friend to put his DS in. The lid painting is a spoof of Animal Crossing Wild World, as it was his favorite game for a long while.

detail, Tom Nook closeup

Second present was a self-made Dancepad so my best real life friend can play Stepmania and not have to use some crappy foam pad or pay a ton for a metal pad and it's expensive shipping cost(which looks boring anyways).

Enter the World of Dancecraft!

2 Leds illuminating each step so he doesn't trip in the dark.

That pad isn't made out of metal, but wood. The steps out of acrylic glass. Depending on how you want it to look the expenses and especially the workload differ a lot.

My Prototype was a lot less work and cheaper too. I made it when my foam pad broke after 4 days of use (what can you expect of a 7.50 Euro Dancepad). I used the control box of the broken pad so in the end I didn't even lose the cash from that.

There are a few tutorials out there for building your own pad, some use wood and some use metal, personally I prefer wood. If you google for "homebrew DDR" you should find quite a bit of info. I didn't take much if any in progress shots of this pad, so I can't really write up a detailed tutorial containing step-by-step images, but if you're not too clumsy and have the tools you should be able to at least build you a pad like the prototype one.

The costs pretty much depend on how cheap you can get the wooden plate, tiles and plexiglass. The rest of the materials are: a cheap gamepad/dancepad to get a circuit board from, some metal discs used as spacers/contacts, some wire(best in different colors), industrial aluminium foil(you can use normal household one, but I'd recommend thicker one for durability) and of course screws and double sided adhesive tape.
Tools would be a trusty Dremel or imitation of choice, screwdriver and a cutting knife.

If the tutorials you can find on the net already really aren't enough guidance for you to build a pad on your own, you might be able to bother me into writing up a guide how I built my pads. The whole concept of those pads is simple, but I still wouldn't say that building one is necessarily an easy task for anyone out there. Really depends on how crafty you are.

Those are both EXTREMELY high on the slick-o-meter. Nice work all around!

I'd freak if someone made me something as cool as that DS case.

I can't help but notice that I received no such awesomeness from you, Horst. I will not forget this affront.

Well, considering the material and expendable tool costs (high speed cutters for the dremel etc) are already in that area, with the amount of work involved to build such a pad this would be a really bad deal for me.

No offense, but the top of the line foam pads cost up to 60 Euros and the metal pads well over 100. So a unique pad like the one I built would have to sell higher than that for it to make any sense. While I wouldn't mind creating another one and selling it, I'd not do it for charity either(unless it'd be for real charity and brings in a ton of cash for the poor or something like that).

I'm honestly sorry about that. Maybe I can manage to make something for you in the future. Meanwhile it would be nice if i could make cash with those things. It seems so far all artsy stuff I have done ends up being a present for someone rather than being sold for profit.

Hey look you posted something! Meanwhile, pigs are flying. The first one is great. Don't know the reference, but it's a great illustration, and makes me wonder why you don't post more artwork? The second is way over my head (I don't even know what a Dancepad is... I'm still playing N64), but it looks cool, and I can't even begin to understand how to create something like that. Looks professional - you could take Math's advice and get some serious cash for this, probably.

There are probably alot of rich people out there that would pay $300+ for a customized DDR pad.....

And don't forget volume production. You could probably prep a bunch of pieces at the same time and customize/assemble them per order. Just an idea.

I have to agree with what has been said above. You could seriously make some cash with that stuff. You just have to make the first step which is of course hard. Make yourself puplic!

Truth is that I post little art because I don't really do much. Especially not finished work. It's a shame, but I have yet to resolve this issue. Maybe this year will prove fruitful, who knows.
