This is one of my first attempts at painting over a pencil drawing of mine (a primitive one thou). It's supposed to be a dragon, but i feel my scales are looking a bit dim , can anyone guide me towards a more organic look.
Also any good tutorials on background ?, with this much focus on the head it should be blurry right ?
(and yeah I know i should have painted the background first)

wow, quite amazing! the detail work is fantastic, i can't wait to see the rest of it! The only (tiny and insignificant.. suggestion i have is to add a bit of darkness to the base of the smaller horns (on the right and bottom)where they come out of the dragon's skin to make them seem more a part of the whole thing, some of them are just too sharp, even and look somewhat like they were just pasted on top of the painting. Thats just a minor suggestion, i think its great work! :P

Hey.. Very excellent work.
I love the amount of detail put into the scales.. You said they looked a bit dim.. I'm assuming you meant flat.. Dragon scales usually have a little sheen to them.. so, although it might take forever.. try adding some specular highlights to the individual scales in places where the light hits them straight on.. see where your highlights appear in yellow? they need to appear brighter on the individual scales.. not just shaded as a whole. Just my 2 bits...

I was gonna get around to darkening the base of the horns, i dunno why but i think most real creature's horns turn dark at the base ?
The specular highlights on the scales is a great idea, it will give a more glistening / wet look to the skin, which is probably what it needs. But your right it will most likely take a while, not in a hurry thou....
Thx for the kind words.

Hi, nice dragon artwork. I might have what could be a 'long-term' solution to the problem of "flat or no flat" scales...
Click on the link below to view the 387K 640x480 .jpg version (original size is 2048x1024)...

This is a thumbnail of a picture I did with ZBrush in 3 hours about a month or so ago. I drew no scales. They were created from a texture as part of a material that gives the scales their 3D look. If I had drawn everything manually - it would have taken me 'til my next birthday - and would have looked quite different!
Hope this helps!
Ciao,

the best part of it are the 2 big horns! it has this 'non-clean looking, good texture feel) i'd put just a FEW more Tiny dents on where the highlights are for an overall effect. |

Ofcourse going 3d in stead of photoshop would allow bump mapping and etc., but i cant model in 3dsmax to save my own ass ... not yet anyways.
That is an awesome dragon model thou, bit more badass than my sorta friendly dragon.
Counterfeit, my firewall is busted, no irc access for me in the near future ....
