I've always wanted to dive into Zbrush, but my first attempt fizzled as I faced that funky UI. Now that I finally found some freetime to try again, here's something I did to test the water: http://www.ethereality.info/ethereality_website/3d/grandpa/grandpa.htm
For organic modelling, this is just an amazing app. No wonder studios around the world all seem to have it in their pipeline now.
Any Sijuners have good Zbrush tips? |

I remember a couple years ago when Mullins said he was invited to judge a painting competition and he picked a Z-Brush user as the winner. The rest of that art community whine and complained that the winner had cheated by using a substandard art program and the art was less, because the process was new and original.
I can't help but wonder what geometric art, such as ornamentation and architectural elements, would look like if created in something like Z-Brush. _________________ http://prettydiff.com/ |

Nice stuff! I think you've already got quite a leg up with the Gnomon dvd. Good tutorial? I've only ever seen the stuff at 3dbuzz. Might take another look into it myself. Thanks for the inspiration @ _________________ Brain

Wow, first time I heard that story. Do you have a link to the Zbrush piece he picked?

Thanks. The Gnomon stuff are typically of a certain quality, and the Zbrush ones are no exception. I think the key is always whether the person watching could extract specific knowledge he needs for his own workflow, instead of just follow the step-by-step instruction.
The 3dbuzz stuff tend to be aimed at total beginners, or at least that's my impression from what I've seen. The Gnomon stuff are more for people who want to get up to speed on a professional level. |

I don't have any additional information. I remember hearing Mullins telling the story while not mentioning any such details on the community to whom this concerned. I do not remember where I even heard it, but I think it was when he was on the Sijun IRC channel around the autumn of 2003, because I remember him being in IRC fairly often just before I left for Kuwait. _________________ http://prettydiff.com/ |

Luna, great to see you trying out new toys, nice work!
I'm a Zbrush addict and use it every day, when I was starting I printed a paper which had some general tips & shortcuts (Zack Petroc's zbrush dvd was awesome http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/zpe01.html ) :
Stroke - Mouse Average 2-4, if strokes are spotty increase number or paint slower
C = Color Picker
Ctrl + Left Mouse Button = Mask
Ctrl + Shift + Left Mouse Button = UnMask
Ctrl + Shift + Left Mouse Button = Hide outside rectangle
Alt + Mouse 1 = Move Camera
Curve - Remeber to load custom made Zcurve
Tools:
Standard
Inflat - for fingers, toes and tricky spots
Smooth
Z intesity around 10 for standard sculpting
S = Draw Size
Press Shift on Standard Brush Mode and it Becomes Smooth
Q = Draw
W = Move
E = Scale
R = Rotate
X, Y, Z = Symmetry sculpting shortcuts for X, Y, Z axis
Tilde Key = Pan Seamless Texture
Shift + Rotate = Snaps to default views (Side, Top, Bottom etc.)
Shift+D and D move between subdivision levels
Alt + Click Screen = Scales Object to Screen Size
ZAppLink you can projection paint using familiar programs, like Photoshop.

Cheney: Underworld Evolution had Zbrush sculpted castle in it, take a look: http://206.145.80.237/intpageimages/luma/frntPageBanner_pug_april_06.jpg

Timo! Been a while since I last talked to you.
I have that DVD--Alex Alvarez gave me a copy, plus a bunch of other DVD's. What a nice guy.
Those are excellent shortcuts/tips!
I was told my piece had a certain "puffiness" that's commonly associated with Zbrush. Guess I'll have to fix that. |
