Pretty characterful face.
If I had be a nitpicker I'd say that perhaps the hair needs little more strokes to bring out the material. Great job!

Looking good. As freebooter said I think the hair would benefit greatly from giving it an actual hair texture. Apart from that I can't give much crits except that the face and especially the nose looks a bit elongated, but that might very well be on purpose.

What I would like to know is how the work was done actually. I have no clue as to the workflow of a gypsum bust and it'd be interesting to hear more about it if you don't mind.

Thanks for the replies, you two.

gLitterbug:

the workflow for this was to first sculpt the bust in clay, then cast a mold of that with gypsum (in three pieces in this case), then that mold was used to cast a gypsum positive of the piece. This process took some detail out, most noticably from the sides of the head where I felt I'd managed to get a pretty nice texture in the clay version... (the person had braids btw, but I guess that's not much of an excuse if it doesn't come across). Then after tweaking the cast a bit, smoothing out the seams etc. I applied some pigments and shellac and wax to create a more interesting surface.
